I don’t know about you, but I was curious about the OLFA 45mm Endurance blade when it was released last March, but I use a 60mm rotary cutter, so it was mostly just a blip on my radar. I saw people discussing how it worked for them, and I was hopeful that OLFA might extend their product offering to include a 60mm Endurance blade.
Clearly, I am not the only one that was waiting, and I am thrilled to say that the 60mm Endurance blade is pretty darn amazing. OLFA has generously provided me with a 60mm Endurance blade to try and allowed me to give away (2) 60mm Endurance blades; one giveaway will be in association with this blog post (see below) and the second will be given away through my Quilting Jetgirl Instagram account, so be sure to enter in both locations!
My nerdy engineering side really wants to know the differences in alloy between the standard tungsten blades and the endurance blades, but it is a proprietary metal chemistry. The bottom line is: does the Endurance blade really last twice as long?
I have been using the 60mm Endurance blade for one month, and I have to say that I am impressed. I normally have a note on my Quilter’s Planner at the beginning of each month to remind me to dust and oil my sewing machine (if I have not recently) and change my rotary blade. I have no reason to change my blade after one month of use (which is longer than I would use a normal blade), and it is still cutting fabric without any skips or requiring extra pressure.
As far as use during the last month goes, I did a LOT of fabric cutting using the Endurance blade when I created the improv piecing for my Murrina quilt. Improv is quite an intensive cutting process… at least for me, anyway! I also made a mini mini quilt and finished a secret sewing project that is a large lap size quilt along with 2 pillows. That’s a lot of fabric cutting, so I am quite impressed with how the blade edge is holding up.
Do you use a 60mm OLFA rotary cutter like me? I really like the light pressure it takes and how many layers of fabric I can cut with ease using the larger 60mm rotary cutter.
