After a break from sewing, small projects like mini mini quilts or charity blocks are always a great way for me to pick back up. Thankfully, the next Many Hands and Many Hearts charity block drive was announced at the end of August, so the requested Low Volume Scrappy Color Row charity blocks were on my menu to sew last week.

The first place I needed to start was with my low volume prints. As you can see in the upper right of the photo above, I processed what low volume prints I had in my stash that I think meet the Many Hands and Many Hearts block requirements well enough. I was able to cut enough from low volume prints to make a total of 12 blocks. Knowing how many blocks I had to work with, next I went to my print stash and pulled out scraps and small remnants to work with.

With a calculator by my side, I cut pieces 2″ tall by varying widths to create the needed twelve 2″ x 8½” strips for the blocks. It was satisfying to arrange the pieces right beside my machine to make chain sewing them together easy.

It’s always satisfying to put block pieces up on my design wall. Each block consists of a low volume print that is cut into an upper 3″ x 8½” rectangle and a lower 4½” x 8½” rectangle with a colorful, scrappy 2″ x 8½” strip sandwiched between the two low volume pieces.

I picked all the fabric for the blocks and cut the low volume prints on the first day, and on the next day I was able to cut all the colorful, scrappy pieces and get the blocks sewn together.

Once again, I sewed ⅛” away from the edge of the block to secure the seams at the edge of each block. This extra seam adds just a bit more security for all the handling that these blocks will undergo until they are sewn into a quilt top.
The 8½” square unfinished blocks fit perfectly in a USPS flat rate envelope and are on their way to the Many Hands and Many Hearts headquarters now. If you have some low volume prints and scraps, you too could contribute a few Low Volume Scrappy Color Row charity blocks in just a few hours; I hope you sew a few blocks to join the ones I made!

I love the blocks you created. I am saving email to use as a scrap buster someday. Over committed right now to take on anything new.
These simple blocks are delightful! I also plan to make a few.
What a fun set of blocks to sew!
They were pretty satisfying to make, right? Glad you had this small-ish project to get you sewing.
I love these!! what fun happy colors and great neutrals!!
Colorful, fun blocks!
I like the alternating backgrounds, very clever!
I’ve been planning to make some of these for MHMH, too. Yours are beautiful with their rainbow of scrappy strips, Yvonne. Thanks for the inspiration!
It’s so true that after a break, intended or not, from sewing, whipping up something simple and pretty is just the ticket! I can see that these certainly served their purpose.
Very fun blocks! You picked some very vivid colors to play with in all of those.
These are just beautiful, Yvonne. Who knew that a zap of color through the middle of low-volume fabrics could be so stunning? Did the pattern call for that color zap to be pieced, or was that your addition? Good luck easing back in to sewing, if it’s something you want to do. I go hotter and colder these days: I sometimes really want to sew and get something done, and then there are the other days, when family and other chores and lack of interest are in the mix. Love these!
What a fun project to jump back in. And you created such a beautiful rainbow of blocks. I am sure they will fit in easily!
These are such fun blocks and so pretty. Love that dash of color through the low volume fabrics!!
