Rainbow Improv | Finished Exposed Seams {Quilting Progress Update}

My motto is currently, “slow and steady wins the race.”

Quilting Progress – Quilt Backing View

I have 29 of the rainbow colored fabric sections quilted (16 to go) and 12 of the background sections quilted (36 to go). Overall, that means I have 41 of 93 sections quilted, so I have 44% of the quilting complete. To be honest, I’m really surprised I have that much done already.

Quilting Detail – Orange and Yellow Blocks

I have really enjoyed using the prints to define the quilting motif I use for each fabric. I especially have enjoyed quilting the meandering leaf and topographical swirl motifs.

Quilting Detail – Green Blocks

Photographing the quilting texture on the front of the quilt is challenging on some prints, but on others it really stands out. I’m using the topographical swirl on all of the Tula Pink mineral prints that were used in the quilt top.

I am definitely in the messy middle / ugly duckling phase of the quilting. I know that the only way out is through, and I am really excited by the texture this quilt will have when it is finished!

    I’ll have to start reminding myself that my machine quilting is just in the “ugly duckling” phase when I’m thinking about ripping it out and starting over. Thanks!

    Amazing progress. It’s fun to see the different quilting motifs you’re choosing to use.

  3. I can honestly say I resemble that remark!! I feel I’m always in the ugly duckling phase with my free motion quilting, but as you say, you just have to keep trudging through it! I love the texture I’m seeing so far!

    Very interesting textures. Quilting block by block like that is time consuming, but it will definitely be worth it in the end.

  5. I love seeing the progress on this. It does take time and patience. You know it will be exactly what you want when done and I hope that is fun. I know I was really pleased with my patriotic piece that took forever to quilt, and I don’t work full time!

  6. I well know that feeling of the quilting seeming to take FOREVER but then when it’s finished, and forever afterwards, it always brings such a thrill as I know yours will too! Come to think of it, it brings little thrills (glimmers!) all throughout the process doesn’t it? I love the back photos, such rich texture; the topographical motif is my favourite. Do you have a name for this one yet?

  7. THe back view really shows off the quilting. I love that each section may have an unique motive.

    Look at you!! I love how you figured out how much you had left, and I all I have to say is carry on, carry on. It’s interesting to see all the different FMQ designs you are using, and the detail on this completed quilt will be just fascinating to look at. Well done, so far!
