Tomorrow, I will be dropping off 42 Mini Square in Square charity blocks at the post office to send to Many Hands and Many Hearts.
Expressions Batiks 10in Square Pack with Cutting Illustration
As part of Cynthia’s request for the Mini Square in Square blocks, she requested the blocks be made in batiks or blender fabrics. While I have a lot of blender fabrics, I opted to purchase a 10″ square pack of batiks to use to make the charity blocks. I’ve added a cutting illustration to the photo of the 10in square pack above in case it is helpful for anyone else. One of the 2½” squares will be used as the mini square in one block, and all of the rest of the pieces are used as the background for a second block.

So, from the (42) 10″ squares, I was able to make (42) 8½” square mini square in square blocks.

Once again, I sewed ⅛” away from the edge of the block to secure the seams at the edge of each block. This extra seam adds just a bit more security for all the handling that these blocks will undergo until they are sewn into a quilt top.

I did reach out to Cynthia to see if it would be better for me to sew these blocks into a quilt top or send them as individual blocks, and she indicated a preference for the blocks. These blocks sew together quickly, so if you have batiks or blenders in your stash, maybe you will consider making a handful of Mini Square in Square blocks as well.

Well I’m sure you can guess what I’m about to write: I LOVE those blocks as they are as a quilt top! I’m squealing a little as they’re so lovely in my (and your) favourite colour. Might have to start a second RSC project…

Wow! 42 blocks! They look great and will be a wonderful addition to this block drive. I plan to make a few blocks for it as well with some batik scraps, but I won’t get to sewing them until May.
