PQ17.6 A Happy Handful
2026 Finished Quilts

A Happy Handful | PQ 17.6

I knew exactly what I was going to make when I read the final Project Quilting prompt for Season 17, a happy handful: mug rugs and hot pads using remnants!

Test Block and Project Quilting Season 17 Remnants

I’ve wanted to cut the orange peel block into quarters to tun it into mug rugs for a few months, and I figured I should be able to use the strip pieced remnants from Starry Plaid to make a few hot pads.

To quilt the mug rugs, I echoed the light blue piecing on both sides of the mug rug. one side has the corner “point” from one end of the orange peel, and the second side has a portion of the side. I used regular batting for the mug rugs, and they will go into regular rotation at our dining table.

I pulled out my Insul-brite remnants and was able to cut (2) pieces that were just a bit larger than 9½” square. I opted to use the two darker color strip sets for the hot pad – one side is the purple and one side is pink on each hot pad. I rotated the direction of the stripes on each side and simply stitched in the ditch down the seams.

All are finished with single fold machine binding (mini mini binding tutorial).

And just like that, I have a happy handful of items to use and a few less remnants/scraps hanging out in my stash! The mug rugs finish at ~5″ square and the hot pads finish at 9½” square.

Thank you for another wonderful year of Project Quilting, Kim and Trish! It’s a great way to kick start my creativity each year. Linking up with Project Quilting 17.6 A Happy Handful.

A very fun way to use those left overs. They are almost too pretty to use. The quilting is beautiful on those mug rugs.

  2. Very nice. I thought this one was a really fun prompt!

  3. How fun and colorful these are, Yvonne. You can’t have too many mug rugs and hot pads, though I tend to save rather than use the ones I make! Have a great remainder of your week.

Such a fun prompt where you could just get right to creating and have finished products in almost no time. Perfect!

  5. Perfect interpretation!! And what fun happy hot pads ! That blue one sort of looks to me like it might want to be an iron pad…. Like set your iron on it ? Its too cute!

  6. Wonderful use of those pieced chunks! And all fit into one hand. :-)

I love all these, and the colors (of course), but I really love that blue quilting on your coasters. Such a precision-Yvonne design and it’s so perfect! Question: are there two more coasters lurking off-camera somewhere? I think this is such a great series of hand-helds. Bravo!

  10. This is a wonderful collection. Practical, beautiful and a great way to use some scraps :)
