The first thing I did last Sunday after reading the Project Quilting 17.5 prompt, My Complements, was to go looking for an online color wheel. I settled on using this digital color wheel from Canva. For some reason, I really wanted to work with Chartreuse, so I started there and noted that the complement was a bright purple with deep blue undertones. Then, knowing how I like to do a color gradient, I selected two other greens that each moved the purple toward red undertones. With a handful of choices pulled up in multiple tabs of my computer browser, I moved to my stash and selected prints that were as close as possible to the color wheel suggestions.

Lupine – Basting
Given that I try to make baby size quilts in response to these weekly prompts, I thought my best chance of getting something fully finished this week was to go simple. I designed a strip pieced block and had the quilt top pieced by Tuesday evening. I basted on Wednesday, which set me up to do the free motion quilting on Thursday and Friday. I also was able to get the quilt trimmed and binding started on Friday with the final binding stitches happening on Saturday.

Lupine – PQ 17.5 My Complements
I named the quilt Lupine because the colors make me think of the beautiful spring lupine wildflowers we enjoy. I found a delightful stripe print in my stash that works with all the colors in the quilt top for a fun finishing touch.

Lupine – Back of Quilt
Lupine finished at 40″ wide by 48 inches long.
To keep from needing to bury threads, I traveled diagonally from section to section when I was quilting. The only time I needed to bury threads was when I ran out of bobbin thread (I ran out of bobbin thread twice while I was quilting the purple sections and once while quilting the green sections).

Lupine – Quilting Detail
I used 50wt Aurifil in 1147 (Light Leaf Green) to free motion quilt meandering leaves in the green sections and 50 wt Aurifil in 4225 (Eggplant) to free motion quilt swirl flowers in the purple sections. After free motion quilting, I switched over to my walking foot to stitch in the ditch between the sections for a bit more definition.

Lupine – Back of Quilt Quilting Detail
I love when a quilt can use a single width of fabric backing, and I used a lime green Tula Pink print that I had purchased to audition for the Highland quilt. It might not have worked in the Highland quilt, but I think it’s perfect for the backing of Lupine!

Yvonne with Lupine
I am thrilled with how Lupine came together, and I am especially happy with its texture. Funny side note: I wore a bright green shirt on Friday and a purple shirt on Saturday. I think I might really like these colors!

You definitely nailed the complementary colors!
Your projects are always Spectacular!
Wonderful job on your quilting!
I love your fabric choices and your FMQ. Having a color wheel available is certainly helpful in working out a palette.
Love the chartreuse and it’s complementary colors all together, Yvonne. Great job on your FMQ. It adds great texture.
It’s been so fun to see each of your challenge projects. The texture and colors in this quilt are so good, and you had the perfect fabrics!
Hilarious that your shirt matches your colour choices because I noticed in the shot of me with my quilt that I’m wearing complementary colours! I should go back into the post and note that. This is a great quilt Yvonne; love the quilting texture, the simple but effective design and that binding!
You picked a very fun color palette for the challenge quilt. Green and purple are one of my favorite color combinations, though I don’t wear much green. Purple is another story. Congrats on a very fun finish. It’s definitely a happy baby quilt.
Love Love Love!! I love all these colors and they are so amazing together – I like how you gradiented ( is that a word) them!!!
Very nice. I so enjoyed reading about Lupine here and seeing it in more detail.
This quilt definitely is evocative of lupines…a few months until we see them here. I love your approach and your quilting is fabulous. You are so right about the backings….getting them done with one piece makes the whole process so much easier. Very nice quilting too, and a great way to move across the quilt without thread breaks…you sure deserve that after 2718!
I always like to really look at your quilts, and to enjoy the care that went into the design and the quilting. This one is simple in execution and design, but as usual, the total is more complex and invites studying. Beautiful quilt, Yvonne!
