I had to hustle today to get my Round 5 piecing for the 2026 Stay At Home Round Robin complete before the Round 6 prompt is shared tomorrow morning. For Round 5, Quilting Gail asked us to use 2 colors. I knew that I could happily add two color blocks down the side of my quilt top, but the question was, what block would I want to use? In order to set myself up the best I can for the last prompt, I wanted to add an 8″ wide by 56½” border to the left and right side of the quilt. If I first sewed a 1½” background strip (1″ finished), that meant I would need to make (8) 7″ finished blocks for the side. Because 7″ is an odd size, I settled on piecing plus blocks, which were easy to adjust to accommodate the size I desired.

To keep it interesting, I chose to alternate between using my print as the plus sign or the background. The quilt currently measures 64½” wide by 56½” tall, and I’m hoping to add 8″ finished blocks to the top and bottom in Round 6 to end up with a 64½” wide by 72½” quilt top. I am looking forward to learning what our final prompt will be tomorrow morning!

What a good idea for the two color border! I like that you alternated them, too. When I look at the quilt as a whole, it’s as if the center block is exploding out with each border. So cool!

I love this quilt more with each round, I have to admit. The plus blocks are a brilliant add, and really are just perfect. I also like how you kept each to two colors, but didn’t limit yourself to just two colors. (I really need to sharpen up my thinking skills!) Given all that was going on for you this week, getting this done is a real miracle. It’s just wonderful!!

This was the perfect response to the two color border. I like that you reversed the background and colors, too. It really is such an interesting quilt and does reverberate from the center.
