Now that the Highland quilt has been received by my in-laws, I can share about how it finished!

Highland Quilt – Quilting
I sent the pieced quilt top to Sew Shabby Quilting to be longarm quilted. I poured over all of Melissa’s patterns, and there were several that would have been lovely with this quilt top. My in-laws and I chose the Bubble Glitter motif, which pulled out the circle and star secondary patterns that emerge in the pieced quilt top.

Highland Quilt – Quilting
The backing of the quilt is a Moda Grunge wideback fabric. The grunge fabric bled a lot when I washed the quilt prior to shipping it to my in-laws. I washed the quilt 3 times with synthrapol and color catches and sent more color catchers off with the quilt along with instructions not to wash anything else with the quilt. I know that Grunge is a popular print, if you have used grunge, have you had problems with it bleeding?

Highland Quilt – Binding
After the quilt came back from Sew Shabby Quilting, it took me 4 days to finish the quilt. 1 day to trim and sew the binding to the front, and 3 days to hand bind the quilting to the back.

Highland Quilt – Pillowcases
After finishing the binding, I stitched up 2 pillowcases using the Film in the Fridge pretty quick pillowcases tutorial with the remaining fabric.

I also snapped a quick photograph of the quilt on my bed before packing everything off and shipping it off.
The Highland quilt finished at 90″ wide by 110″ long.

A beautiful finish! The quilting is really interesting and works with the piecing. I don’t use a lot of grunge, but it seems strange that you would have that much bleeding with a fabric. Maybe it was a bad batch or it’s just the color is just more soluble then some?
Oh, your in-laws are going to be so pleased. I love the liveliness of the quilting against the piecing. I don’t recall having color bleed with Grunge specifically, but I have had many problems over the years with dark saturated greens. I wonder if wide backs are more prone since they are slightly different from typical yard goods? Good call to supply color catchers and washing instructions.
What a beautiful quilt, and the quilting design chosen is perfect! I’ve used quite a bit of Grunge and had no idea that it can run? I’m trying to think if I’ve had that happen with the quilts I’ve made, but I don’t think so?
Spectacular finish! The quilting motif you chose is perfect.
What a beautiful quilt! The quilting design is perfect for it and I think your binding fabric looks great. I don’t remember having any trouble with grunge bleeding, but I don’t typically use it and if I do, it’s not usually a super dark color. This quilt is quite large – quite a difference from your mini quilts that I always enjoy seeing. :-)
Love the quilting pattern and am also happy you sent it out (those big quilts are so hard on the body with small machines). It really turned out beautifully!
A gorgeous quilt! Congratulations on such a beautiful design.
This is such a cool quilt. I’m sure your in-laws cherish it. Thank you for sharing your process.
Yes, we’ve experienced a lot of bleeding with Grunge fabrics. It might just be with darker colors, but good call sending the color catchers. I love batiks and my husband loves Grunge, so Color Catchers are a must for our quilts.
Thanks for sharing about your color-running experience! I’ve got some particularly vibrant and saturated Essex Linen soaking in synthrapol in a bucket right now, and been wondering what to do next.. it’s destined for garment use so I need to think about pre-shrinking as well as color bleeding, but it’s always good to hear more about others’ experiences like how you washed three times and were still not sure it was done bleeding/running/etc.
It’s a gorgeous finish!!!!! So beautiful, hopefully it will see them through many years of coziness.
What a gorgeous quilt! Hopefully Elphaba doesn’t fly over and steal it from your in-laws! Ha! I appreciated the link for the pillows. I’m thinking of making two or three for myself. As far as grunge, my color catchers have definitely caught some of the darker colors. I also use Synthrapol every time I wash a new quilt along with three color catchers.
It finished so beautifully, Yvonne. I love that you made coordinating pillow cases to go with it. I’m sure your in-laws were thrilled with their new quilt!
What a fabulous quilt for your inlaws! I love that you made matching pillowcases, too. Bubble Glitter really is reflective of the quilt and a perfect pantograph for this beauty.
LOVE it!! that panto is just perfect. I like how it reminds me of you too . A lot of love into this quilt ;-)
What a stunning finish! The coordinating pillow cases are a great touch!
Love the colors. Love the curves. Such a stunning quilt!
This is so pretty! I haven’t touched my sewing n over a year due to multiple eye surgeries, but I am ready to get back to it now. You’ve inspired me!
Such a beautiful quilt! I really like the quilting motif they chose. I haven’t had a problem with Grunge, either with regular width or wide back but the wide back was turquoise, so not a dark one like the green. I love making matching pillowcases if I have enough leftover fabric. Bet it feels so good to have completed this gift!
Stunning finish, Yvonne!!! I love all the greens, especially at this time of year when we’re ready for green to appear again. I really like Sew Shabby Pantos and would’ve found it tough to narrow it down to only 1 panto. Great choice! And I like the matching pillowcases, too.
This is a fantastic finish, Yvonne! I love the greens. They remind me of St. Patty’s Day and that spring will soon be here!
Hi Yvonne, what a great quilt. I’m sure that your in-laws will sleep well under it!
Beautiful quilt, and the pillowcases are a very cool touch.
Wonderful quilt ! I love the green harmony and the curves! Is there a pattern for it?
