I am really glad I had a few projects that distracted me from making progress on the 3rd round of the 2026 Stay At Home Round Robin this week. First, I went ahead and made a quick, small mug rug to meet the Project Quilting 17.3, Year of the Horst, prompt. Then, I was able to finish the Highland quilt and get it shipped off to my in-laws (I’ll share that finish with you after they receive the quilt). Working on those projects first gave me space to really consider Emily’s prompt for the third round: Animal Kingdom.
2026 SAHRR Inspiration – The Dove Quilt Block
I spent quality time with my copy of Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, and ultimately I settled on using block #1458, The Dove, as inspiration for this round.
2026 SAHRR Round 3 – Piecing
Looking at the size of my quilt top after the second round (36½” wide x 40½” tall), I quickly calculated that I could use (8) 5″ finished blocks (5½” unfinished) on each side. I picked up on two key features of the drunkard’s path blocks in The Dove block:
- The curves do not run to the corner of the blocks; they are smaller and there is more concave shape at the edges of the block.
- The position of the background and colored fabrics alternate between the concave and convex shapes.

To set myself up to be able to make (8) blocks for the top and bottom in Round 4, I also added a 1″ finished (1½” unfinished) strip to bring my SAHRR up to 48½” wide by 40½” tall.
Backing Fabric – Equanimity
Last, but not least, this week I purchased fabric that I plan to use for the backing of my quilt (and possibly the binding). I picked up 4½ yards of Equanimity in Chartreuse by Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics from superbuzzy. I think it will make a great backing!

It is fascinating all the derivatives of the so-called drunkard’s path block and whether or not the curve goes all the way to corner makes a different in how it looks in the quilt, as you point out. Alternating them like this sort of looks like mushrooms, so if someone sees that shape (like I do) you are representing not only animal kingdom, but also plant kingdom. It’s really so beautiful, Yvonne!

Dove! This is a great block, and it goes so well with what you had before. I appreciate the time and thought you clearly put into your rounds. The fabric you have picked out for the back/binding is gorgeous!
I love the feel I get from your SAHRR. It feels light and happy, almost like one might feel when getting ready to fly away to a fun vacation location. That may not be your intent, but it is a great view for the observer. Thanks
