Well, I am really glad that I waited to sew on the blocks that I made in response to the 2026 SAHRR Round 1 prompt of hourglass. Huge thanks to Sandra from mmmquilts for suggesting I consider alternating red to lime green on the left and lime green to red on the right for the hourglass blocks. That ended up being the perfect balance once I considered the Round 2 prompt of Make it a Double!
2026 SAHRR Round 1
Shortly after Kathleen announced the “Make it a Double” prompt, I jumped back into my design software (Inkscape) and quickly decided that keeping all the reds/oranges at the top and yellows/greens at the bottom made the design feel too heavy. Remembering Sandra’s comment on my last SAHRR update post, I switched the right hand hourglass blocks to run in the opposite direction. Then I was able to keep the color flow moving with a top and bottom border in response the this week’s Round 2 prompt. Ahhh, so much better! Knowing where I was going, it took less than an hour to get my Round 1 blocks sewn to the center. After Round 1, the pieced quilt measured 36½” wide by 28½” tall.
2026 SAHRR Round 2 Templates and Pieces
Before I even finished reading Kathleen’s prompt suggestion for Make it a Double, I knew I would be piecing more double orange peel blocks (like I used in the center of the Highland quilt). The templates that my husband 3D printed for me make 10″ finished blocks, and those were just too large for my SAHRR quilt top. So, he quickly re-scaled the templates down to make 6″ finished blocks and printed those on his 3D printer for me. In combination with my quarter circle templates from Jen Carlton-Bailly, I had all the pieces cut and ready to sew together quickly.
2026 SAHRR Round 2
I broke up the piecing over 2 days. My SAHRR quilt top currently measures 36½” wide by 40½” tall. I’m having a blast thinking through each prompt!

I love that your clever husband could rescale those ‘double’ block templates for you and wow, the color-flow is so so good!
It looks SO good and absolutely has your personal stamp on it. And it’s awesome that your husband could print those 3D templates out in a smaller size for you. How long does it take for 3D templates to print?

Wow! The borders from both prompts really play well with your center. The color gradation from green to orange really works. Between that and the interesting blocks, it’s defiantly a winner.

Thanks for the shoutout :-) This just flows around this current border almost like neon lights on a sign. Yay for your husband adjusting the templates and yay for all the joy and fun you clearly are having.

I am so enjoying watching your SAHRR quilt grow. And I love how Sandra’s suggestion contributed to the flow of the borders. Round 2 fits so well with Round 1. Who knew the orange peels would make such a fun re-appearance with the “make it double” theme. SAHRR is one of my favorite groups to follow at this time of year.

I love this, Yvonne! Those double orange peels are calling to me! Does your hubby sell those templates he prints? If not, he should! Those of us who struggle with cutting curves accurately could really benefit. js ;)
