Hello and welcome! Today my quilt pattern is being shared as part of the Quilter’s Advent Calendar, so if this is your first time visiting my blog, I want to extend a warm welcome to you and thank you for stopping by. My name is Yvonne Fuchs, and I started quilting in high school which means I’ve been quilting for over 30 years now! I am an aerospace engineer turned technical writer during the weekdays and I quilt and write patterns in the evenings and over the weekends. I consider myself a modern quilter, and I love designing and working on quilts in series. I have over 100 free tutorials (so please be a bit patient, the page can take a bit of time to load), and I send out a monthly newsletter, The Launching Pad, on or around the 15th of each month.
Today, I want to report on my piecing progress for the Highland quilt, a bed sized quilt that I designed for my in-laws.

Highland Quilt Mockup
The Highland quilt will measure ~90″ x 110″, so when I started piecing it last month, I wasn’t sure how much of it was going to be able to fit on my design wall.

Highland Quilt – Early December Progress
I started by piecing the outer orange peel blocks, and I was delighted to find that if I build the quilt out sideways on my design wall, the blocks will barely all fit! Since then, I’ve been working on the interior double orange peel blocks (using the 3D printed templates). I would have made more progress on the quilt this week, but I paused work on the quilt in order to sew on labels and hanging sleeves to my quilts that were accepted into QuiltCon.
Because I paused on piecing the quilt top, I’m probably going to dive in and make some charity blocks for Many Hands and Many Hearts before getting back to the Highland quilt later this month. The requested Black & White Framed blocks look like they should come together quickly, and I’ve already verified I have enough black and white prints for the frames.
At this point, I’m hoping to have the quilt top pieced in the next month to month and a half. Given the size of the quilt, I plan to send it out to be quilted by a longarm quilter. What are you planning to work on this week?

Your highland quilt is looking good! I like how it features your signature transparency effect.
The Highland is looking SO good!!
The quilt top is looking amazing! Great job!
Highland is really coming along nicely! I love the greens. Thanks for the reminder on the Many Hands blocks, I might try to get some of those done this week.
Wow, that is an amazing design. The colors are so interesting. I’m working on custom quilting a panel for Christmas so I can hang it this year. I hope to finish it this week.
Well, I’m a sucker for curves and this pulled me right in! I think the idea of the greens is totally on target (of course it is), and will be a beautiful quilt for your in-laws. You are making great progress, even if you stopped for labels and Many Hands blocks. I am also happy that it fit onto your design wall!
You’ve made really good progress on all those blocks. What’s on the design wall looks exactly like what’s in the mock up. Pretty impressive. Happy stitching!
Looking great. This quilt will be a stunner!
