Highland Quilt {Fabric Cut}

Thanks to a large “atmospheric river” we have received nearly 3 inches of rain since Thursday evening. With that much rain, the only right choice is to stay inside and work on a quilt project, right?? Also: my apologies for the poorly lit indoor photos in this blog post.

In addition to the double orange peel block templates that my husband 3D printed for me, he also made large orange peel templates. The templates themselves are so large they cannot be printed by his machine in one piece. To get around that, we used a dovetail to separate each template into 2 pieces and then simply taped the two pieces together (on both sides of the template). Worked like a charm.

With quantities of 28, 48, 56, 96, and 192, it took me 3 solid days of cutting patience to get all of the fabric cut and ready to for the Highland quilt. Now that my least favorite part of the quilt making process is over, I’m looking forward to seeing the blocks and quilt start to come together.

The Highland quilt is going to be large enough that I think the only way it *might* fit on my design wall is if I rotate it sideways. Guess I’d better make some blocks so I can see what might work!

  1. Agreed that all that cutting is my least favorite part of quilting! I haven’t made a large quilt in awhile and I will be shocked when I need to! The darkness of the rainy days can be so annoying…we are getting more which is good for the earth, but until se start getting more light in the day in the new year, it always seems twice as dreary to me.

  2. I cannot wait to see this quilt start to take shape. I agree with you on the cutting. I’m always glad when that step is done! Clever trick, dovetailing those pieces, then fitting them together. Have fun sewing!

  3. Innovative solution! I’m still quite jealous that he could cut the templates for this cool block! Happy sewing.

    Great solution for printing the templates! I have a feeling there will be more unique templates in your future.

    Congratulations on getting it all cut out! Clever hack with the dovetail joint: you engineers are awesome. I’ve been doing quilts that are scrappy, so I miss the times when you could just go to town in cutting up a select few fabrics — quite an accomplishment!

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
