Highland Test Block Hot Pads

Life this past week has been really busy, and I finally carved out some time on Sunday night to touch fabric for the first time in about a week and a half. Both our vehicles had check engine lights come on, which is never fun and doubly entertaining when they sort of happen at the same time. On the plus side, I have our holiday cards for the year ordered.

I decided yesterday evening that I would turn the 3 Highland test blocks into hot pads. I had it in my mind to do that as soon as I finished the orange test block, but perhaps one of the reasons I hadn’t made any progress is that I was kind of dreading lots of stops and starts if I echo quilted the double orange peel shapes. A 1″ grid (made using a ruler and my Hera marker) that stops and starts off the block solves that problem!

I even have the binding strips cut. Progress.

What are you working on this week?

  1. These look fun! I am busy piecing a backing this week. I rarely piece backings but it seemed to make sense. I hope to share later this week. Have a good day!

  2. I’m glad you were able to sneak in a little sewing in the midst of your busy life. Two check engine lights – not fun. Hope it was a quick fix. Those blocks are cute!

Hi there – I live making something quick and using up odds and ends. So I love these hot pads!!
Two check engine lights?! Gah! That’s awful. I hope neither was anything too costly- I just did all the usual with my car – oil change, tire rotation and a 60K mile service. Hoping it is good for a while now.
    Have a nice week Yvonne!

These will quilt up quick with that grid – good choice!

Hot pads are always welcome and your piecing and quilting are so great. Hope the check engine lights were not major problems. My light comes on when I run out of windshield washer fluid. I always have to look up the icon in the handbook to see what’s wrong!

  6. I bet you were going thru fabric withdrawals!!! That is a long time. Sorry about both check engine lights – hope they were easily fixed. I love these hot pads – that a fun block – and they will make you smile!!

“touch fabric” yep absolutely. my significant other is an arborist and they and their colleagues talk about touching trees similarly — like “i’ve been working on spreadsheets all week, i haven’t touched trees in ages!” touching fabric is a perfect category of Soothing Activity to Keep Body and Soul Together. (also chocolate. but not at the same time.)

  9. I think the grid is perfect for hotpads. Hope things settle down a bit in your real life!

  10. Car trouble is no fun! Love these little hot pads…they are so adorable. The grid quilting is an absolutely perfect choice for these.

Ah, those busy-busy-drive-you-crazy weeks. Glad you survived and lived to write about it here, which is always a good sign. These blocks must be addicting, in a way, given the interesting way the colors/values interact. I’m happy you had something fun to break the crazy!

  12. These are going to be the most awesome potholders ever!

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
