I was able to get the quilting completed on the 2718 quilt that I’m hoping to have finished in time to submit to QuiltCon at the end of the month. There were a total of 1,800 thread tails that needed buried as part of the quilting process, so I knew that I needed a short break to do something else before I final trim and bind the 2718 quilt.

2718 Quilt – Buried Quilting Thread Tails
Because I had done all the prep work for the Color Block Stars, I knew that an afternoon spent piecing the blocks together so I could get them shipped to Many Hands and Many Hearts was the perfect solution!

Color Block Stars – Block Layout
As a quick reminder: the color block star quilt blocks had been hanging out on my design wall as shown above, waiting on me to make the stitch and flip star points with smaller white squares.

Color Block Stars – Pieced Star Points
I almost forgot to stop and take a few process photos yesterday afternoon. Chain piecing the star points quickly rolled into…

Color Block Stars – Pieced Rows
…chain piecing the rows. And before I knew it,

I had the 12½” square quilt blocks finished.

Color Block Stars – Securing the Seams
I never count the blocks as finished and ready to ship until I stitch ⅛” from the edge to secure the seams. This extra stitched line adds a bit of insurance to quilt blocks that are being shipped and potentially handled a lot. Charity quilt blocks might need to be touched, moved, and puzzled into quilt tops. Given all that extra handling, I feel better knowing I’ve done what I can to reinforce the seams in a way that won’t affect the blocks when they are sewn together into a quilt top (the extra securing seam is inside the normal ¼” seam allowance).
The finished Color Block Stars have been shipped to Many Hands and Many Hearts. I hope you might consider making some to send in, too!

Ooh such pretty eye candy! Hope you rested your eyeballs after burying alllll those tails.
love the colorful pile of threads! Burying is my least favorite part of the process. Nice job on the blocks!
Such pretty blocks. I plan to make a couple in the next few weeks.
What a lovely and purposeful interlude!
Beautiful donation blocks, such bold and bright colors. Hope you made some progress on burying all those strings. It’s a time consuming process.
Your precision is a thing of beauty, and I (as usual) remain in awe. Love the star blocks’ fronts AND backs; they are just terrific. 1800 thread tails? I’m overwhelmed, but that’s why you receive awards for your quilts. I’m hoping this one gets the nod!
The thread tails make a beautiful photo!
Look at you – working with prints! Mouth-watering and eye-popping blocks. I have always loved these blocks. See them often pop up in Rainbow Scrap Challenge posts. 3″ grid for 12″ blocks – must keep that in mind. Wish you good luck with Quiltcon entries.
2718 produced a lot of thread tails in the quilting! These blocks are quite stunning, which always amazes me when it comes from a pile of scraps!
Wow, that is a lot of thread ends to bury. I am sure, I would have it finished in …. about thirty years ;) Congrats on your stamina. And lovely stars! xo
