I have several reasons to celebrate today: it’s my birthday, and I have a new pattern that I am excited to release!
When I finished Frost Filigree earlier this year, I had intended to publish a quilt pattern for it shortly thereafter. But as often happens, life intervened. My key distractions toward making progress on writing the quilt pattern were that I started a new job, I got excited by a new piecing idea (that I hope to have translated into a quilt in time to submit to QuiltCon), and I wanted to focus on making progress on a quilt for my in-laws. Life seems to have reached an equilibrium that has granted me pockets of time toward pattern writing again, so I made the most of that to get the Frost Filigree digital quilt pattern finished!
Fabrics & Materials
The multi-color, lap size cover quilt was made using Kona Cotton solids in White (Background), Burgundy (Fabric A), Crimson (Fabric B), Ruby (Fabric C), Tomato (Fabric D), Chili (Fabric E), and Carrot (Fabric F).
I chose to create a color blocked binding, using 4 of the 6 non-background piecing colors. I changed the binding color every time it touched a pieced color on the edge of the quilt, as shown in the photo above before I hand stitched the binding down to the back of the quilt.
Quilting
The front cover quilt was quilted on my domestic Juki TL-2200 QVP Mini using a walking foot with coordinating 50wt Aurifil thread. The pairings of Kona Cotton and Aurifil that I used are:
- Kona White – Aurifil 2024 (white),
- Kona Burgundy – Aurifil 2468 (dark wine),
- Kona Crimson – Aurifil 2460 (dark carmine red),
- Kona Ruby – Aurifil 2260 (red wine),
- Kona Tomato – Aurifil 2250 (red),
- Kona Chili – Aurifil 2277 (light red orange), and
- Kona Carrot – Aurifil 1104 (neon orange)
To begin, I marked and quilted 1″ spaced arcs* and paths in the background using a combination of straight rulers and 1″, 2″, 3″, 4″, and 5″ quarter circles. After the background quilting was complete, I marked and quilted a 1″ square crosshatch grid within each of the concave shapes using the matching thread colors noted above.
*Note: 1″ to 5″ perfect quarter circle templates I used to mark my quilting lines are included in the pattern.
Frost Filigree Pattern Details
Frost Filigree is a confident-beginner modern quilt design. There is curved piecing, and for those new to piecing curves, I recommend starting with the throw quilt size which has larger and gentler curves to sew.
Sizing / Finished Measurements
- Baby (40″ x 40″, 4″ finished curves)
- Lap (50″ x 50″, 5″ finished curves)
- Throw (60″ x 60″, 6″ finished curves)
Additional Colorways
I was really struck by the desire to have a red and white quilt when I was designing Frost Filigree, so all of my colorway mockups follow this rich quilting heritage inspiration.

Happy birthday What a striking pattern and I loved that you included a picture of yourself quilting it. It somehow makes it more approachable.

Congrats on a great pattern release! This pattern really shows off all your skills, from quilting to color, to perfect quilt engineering. Bravo, Yvonne, and a very happy birthday!!
Such economy of color and shape – absolutely fantastic. Also answers the question – what do you mean by barely touching? :-D
Love this quilt and the ombre is so much fun. I have ombre nail polish on right now! And wishing you a very very happy birthday!
A very belated happy birthday! So glad you’ve had time to get back to pattern writing. It’s a beautiful quilt.
