2718 Quilt - Fabric Selection

2718 Quilt {Fabric}

In May, I started working to curate fabrics for a new quilt idea. I made several mug rug through mini quilt examples to test out the idea, and I learned that while the idea can be pulled off with any fabric, it really is just easiest to work with fabrics that are the same thickness/thread count/weight. So, I knew that working with the same fabric manufacturer was going to be in my best interest. With that in mind, I started looking for prints (not solids!!!) that worked well together, and I narrowed in on using Ruby Star Society for this particular quilt. After several purchases to fine tune the grouping, this is the fabric that I am currently working with in my studio:

I purchased all of my fabric from Sewtopia. From left to right:

I worked my best to move around the colorwheel and blend the colors together. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty pleased with the value and color transitions I was able to achieve. Note that my plan does involve fussy cutting the Juicy Rattan Buttercup print to feature as much of the orange as possible.

Over the past few weeks I have cut all the pieces needed for this project and started piecing. With 2718 seams to sew and lots of thread changes (I’ll be matching piecing thread color to the prints as I go), this one is going to take me a while to complete. I’m hoping to get it finished in time to submit to QuiltCon this year. So far, I have one-third of the sections for the quilt top pieced and I am still excited to see it come together. One stitch at a time!

    Love your fabric choices! I am guessing this is your entry to to Quilt Con and can’t wait to see its reveal.

  2. I hope you do get it done in time for QuiltCon this year and that it turns out exactly as you envision it! This past QuiltCon featured almost all quilts made of only solids. It’s interesting that you chose prints for this project. I can’t wait to see more of it!

    Beautiful fabric choices. I can’t wait to see more.

  4. That fabric run is a feast for the eyes! I’m curious to know what the new technique is. Oof! on the number of seams but if you’re a third through, that’s nearly a thousand, so have fun plugging away!

  5. What a pretty fabric group! I’m completely curious to see what you are creating!

  6. Such a gorgeous gradient of color. I like that you also have a great range of values. I’m curious about why you’re switching up your piecing threads to match the fabrics. Is that to ensure that there is no thread show-through?

  7. This sounds like quite the exciting project! I love the fabrics you’ve chosen.

  8. Your fabric choices look wonderful! Have fun playing with some prints, and I know your new design will be amazing.

    You picked a wonderful color palette. Looking forward to seeing how all these come together in a finished quilt.

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
