Half In Half Out Mini - Initial Fabric Pull

Half In Half Out Mini Quilt {Fabric Prep}

I am really excited about a new idea, and I am deep in the make some things and test it out phase. I have completed test blocks, finished a mini mini quilt, and finished a mini quilt. Those successes gave me the confidence to try another variant of the idea while I wait on a few fabric orders so I can expand the first mini quilt out into something larger. While I wait on fabric to arrive, I dug through my stash to curate the fabric for the next mini quilt exploration.

What I find super interesting is that my current idea requires using (88) 5″ squares, so (3) charm packs or 5″ stacker packs would also work. I don’t really stock pre-cuts in my stash, so I went through my collection of Carolyn Friedlander prints to curate what I’ll use for this mini quilt. My Carolyn Friedlander print stash is mostly fat quarters and fat quarter remnants, but I have a LOT of variety. I started out with (2) 5″ squares from 44 different prints, and 42 of those prints are shown in the photograph above (2 more orange prints were used to test out the idea). Since then, I realized that my first blocks were not quite right, and I also made a mistake with another print, so the final mini quilt will be slightly different than my initial fabric pull, shown above.

I’m also not sure if I’m going to keep the prints in this order or not. I plan to make all of my blocks and then experiment with their final placement on my design wall. It takes me about an hour to make 8 blocks, and the mini quilt requires 88 blocks. I am just about halfway through making the blocks, and it’s exciting to see it come together.

What are you working on right now? I’m having a lot of fun exploring something new and hope that you are finding joy in your sewing, too.

    I find myself guessing which two oranges will not be continuing on….then it will be a puzzle in the finished quilt to find which ones they are. Your pull is so beautiful layer out like it is.

    Mostly my favorite part of making the quilt is fabrics choice. Sometimes it just grabs me and remains, rarely does it require more than a few tweaks. Color, more color is my mantra. Can not wait to see as you progress

    I am such a fan of seeing fabrics all laid out in color order, no matter what the order is. So yes, I’m gaga over what you are showing (although to be truthful, the big reveals are coming later). What I love is feeling the energy of a new project, something to get the sewing vibes going again. I know you are a busy lady, so I’m happy you found the time for this!
