Black and White Blocks for a Friend

Last week, I made two 12½” square unfinished black and white blocks for a friend. I had planned to write this blog post to share about them sooner, but I had an ocular migraine on Thursday afternoon and after a little over 3 days, I’m finally able to stand looking at a computer screen again. Thankfully, I was able to get the blocks in the mail Thursday morning before that started.

Other than the general request to use black and white prints and the size of the blocks, all options were on the table. Given the two color request, I was drawn to thinking about blocks that played around with inverting the position of the fabrics, like in the log cabin variation block above.

My second block makes me think of the engineering symbol for center of mass or center of gravity. As with all the blocks that I make and send in the mail, I made sure to secure the seams by stitching about ⅛” away from the edge across all the seams at the edge of the blocks.

There is a new block drive request for Many Hands and Many Hearts as well (Scrappy Chains), so I will hopefully feel well enough to sew some of those blocks this week.

  1. These blocks are striking! Sorry to hear about the migraine. That sounds quite rough.

very impressed by positioning of log cabin squares. What a whole quilt would look like?!! May have to try myself.

  3. Black and white is such a dynamic pairing, and your blocks are great! Sorry about the migraine, but glad you are feeling better!

  4. Cool blocks!
Sorry about the migraine – that sounds very painful

  5. These blocks are perfect. Both the fabrics are gorgeous. Glad you got past that migraine, no fun at all.

The blocks look great. I’m working with black and white these days too, for bee blocks.
Hope you ARE feeling better and this can be a better week for you.

  7. I love these strong graphic blocks. I don’t often stitch around the perimeter of my blocks, but it doesn’t take that much time, and it can help the block (or quilt) intact.

Your black and white blocks are really striking. That’s a good reminder to stitch over all the seams!

Black and white is so dramatic. Sorry you had to deal with the migraine, those are never fun. Hope you are back to regular stitching.

  10. Very cool blocks. They make me think of the face/vase optical illusion (Rubin’s vase). Being a migraine sufferer myself, I can completely empathize—they are not just ‘very bad headaches’. I got a migraine-specific prescription from my doctor which has been invaluable. Hope you’re feeling much better.

Okay this post had two look-ups: ocular migraine (ouch!) and engineering icon for the center of mass. I’m sorry about the migraine, and hope they aren’t a lengthy or frequent visitor; glad you’ve recovered. And I love your blocks, especially the center-of-mass circle block. Very clever and great fun, as is Yvonne-usual. I hope your recipient loves them! PS Love the stitching.

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
