You might know Michelle from her blog, From Bolt to Beauty, and her weekly Beauties Pageant linkup. Due to her clever pattern designs, I have been telling quilters interested in jelly roll quilt patterns about Michelle for years (Ridiculously Easy Jelly Roll Quilt, Still Pretty Simply Jelly Roll Quilt), and her book solidifies her place as the queen of jelly roll quilt pattern design!
About Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts
In Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts, Michelle shows that 2½” precut strips are capable of far more than you ever imagined. The book is a collection of 14 patterns that range in size from wall hangings to bed-size quilts.

Tag Sale Floral
When I received a copy of Michelle’s book, I was amazed at the variety of designs. I wanted to make a block to help celebrate her book, but it was hard to decide which pattern I wanted to work with. I was tempted by I Heart Rainbows because I really do love rainbows, but in the end I fell in love with Tag Sale Floral. Michele envisioned the design encircling items on her kitchen table (photograph above of the version from the book courtesy of C&T Publishing). Given the size of the quilt (43½” square as written in the book), I knew it would make a perfect baby quilt to have on hand ready to gift.
Tag Sale Floral – Fabrics
Once I knew what I wanted to make, I started by cutting my own custom 2½” jelly roll strips from my print stash. When I was auditioning background fabrics, I almost used a soft off-white as a default without putting much thought into it. But then the rich Kona Purple in my stash caught my eye, and goodness, I just love how the prints glow against it! I enjoy being able to showcase how different fabric selections make a quilt design look, so this dark background choice really was meant to be.
Tag Sale Floral – Finished Quilt
Following the instructions in the book, the Tag Sale Floral quilt top came together quickly and easily in just 3 post-work afternoon sewing sessions. I did opt to make my sashing and border strips just a bit larger than the pattern called for, so my quilt top is 46½” square. Because I chose an all over free motion quilting motif (more about it below), I was able to baste and finish the quilting in two afternoons.
Tag Sale Floral – Backing and Quilting Detail
I chose Kona Jungle for the backing and I used Geometry – One Eighty – Citron, a delightful stripe, for the binding. I think the backing shows off the scroll flowers quilting beautifully. It’s a fun FMQ motif and I thought it was the perfect complement to the quilt design. I used 50wt Aurifil 2581 (Dark Dusty Grape), selected to match the Kona Purple quilt top background, for the top and bobbin thread.

For those who know me, you know that I am not a quilter that has precuts in my stash; I like to purchase yardage. I hope that my delight in these designs and the fact that I had a hard time picking a single quilt that spoke to me gives you confidence in what a well rounded and delightful book Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts would be to add to your quilting library. I definitely see myself coming back and making more quilts from Michelle’s book in the future!

Well I missed all the fun while I was traveling, I can see! I’m hoping this comment goes through as that is really a perfectly wonderful quilt with that stunning deep background. You really have an eye for color! I, too, don’t have a many precuts in my stash, preferring yardage. But your post lets us know that that doesn’t need to hold us back from using her book. A great post!!
