Due to lots of life things happening over the past year, when I announced the Effervescence Quilt Along, I only had the quilt top pieced. I am thrilled today to share that I was able to get the quilt finished, and I think it was worth the wait.
Effervescence – Finished Quilt Next to Inspiration Quilt
You might remember that the Effervescence quilt is based on a smaller improv quilt, so I thought the most fitting location to photograph the finished quilt was beside the inspiration quilt (which hangs on our living room wall). Just like I did for the inspiration quilt, I opted to go with a two color pieced binding for this finish. In this case I used Fabrics C and L for the binding, and I carried the Fabric L up and over the top of the quilt a bit more this time.
Effervescence – Quilting Detail
For the quilting, I chose to free motion quilt an all over design that is half stipple/meander and half loop. I used a rainbow variegated thread, 50wt Aurifil 3817 (Marrakesh).
Effervescence – Quilt Backing
The backing is the same as Fabric M in the quilt top, and I’m sure long term blog readers will not be surprised to see I chose to back the quilt in blue (my favorite color). The two tone binding really stands out in this photograph, too. Many thanks to my husband for holding up the quilt for these photos – he commented that it was a lot easier not to have to struggle in the wind for this indoor photo shoot!

The Effervescence quilt along is making good progress; all of the blocks for Rows 1-4 have been released and there is only one more fabric (Fabric O) to get introduced into the quilt tops. I’m delighted to get to see progress from quilters each week.

Congrats on the finish. It’s so colorful and the blue backing is perfect. Hopefully you are finding the balance between work and stitching time, it’s a hard one to maintain.

Beautiful, Yvonne! I love seeing the inspiration (smaller) quilt next to the Challenge (larger) — double the color!! Congratulations on finishing the quilting and the binding in a creative manner that doesn’t argue with the quilt, but only complements it. It will be a good motivator to your group to finish it — always a good thing!
What a perfect place to photograph the new version. I enjoyed going between the two, checking out the improv sections with the QAL sections. No surprise at all on the backing, lol; what struck me though, is that would be, well a lot of work, but a perfect backing to flip the quilt so the back side is up, and use the bubbles pattern in the backing as a quilting motif which, tickles me, echoes the honeycomb tile on the side of your fireplace! Great to see a photo of you with your quilt!
This is really beautiful! I like the way the color washes across the quilt, it looks so fun and improv. I’ve never tried variegated thread, do you think it helps blend in, or does it stand out more?
