Stitch and Flip – Top Tips

The Effervescence quilt pattern uses the stitch and flip method. Here are a few tips when marking your fabric for stitch and flip:

1. Be sure to mark on the wrong side of your fabric.
2. Refer to the pattern illustrations to make sure you are marking in the correct orientation (i.e. upper left to lower right, etc.).
3. Tip: When in doubt, flip the unit open after stitching but BEFORE trimming the seam allowance – it’s much easier to use a seam ripper and reposition than it is to cut new fabric pieces!!
4. When marking diagonal lines on the wrong side of a rectangle, if your ruler has a 45-degree line that runs to a corner of the ruler, line up the 45-degree line and the corner of the ruler with one point of the line you want to draw (see photo above). Take your time and be sure that the line you will draw is oriented correctly per the pattern illustration.
5. After marking the diagonal line, measure the distance from the edge of the rectangle to the second end of the diagonal line – it should be the same measurement as the width of the rectangle (2½” for the example shown below).

Make a mistake? No worries! I made several cutting mistakes as I pieced the stitch and flip units when I tested the pattern. There should be plenty of extra fabric to cut more pieces to correct the mistake.

Tip: Perhaps the unit will not need to be remade! This is a quilt based on another quilt that I made improvisationally. If you simply pieced the stitch and flip unit the wrong way but it is the correct size, consider if you can live with your block looking a little bit different. As long as each block is 8½” wide by 12½” tall, there is no wrong block – just unique versions of the design.

Don’t forget to save your Bonus HSTs for the bonus quilt or for another future project. The bonus quilt uses all the Bonus HSTs that are 2½” square or larger. I personally did not make the bonus HSTs that were smaller than 2½” square.
