Between all the life stuff going on (trying to address health topics for myself and my husband), the intense social and political things going on in the US and around the world right now, doing some pattern writing, and all the things I want to be doing in my quilting studio right now, it has been a while since I have used my sewing machine. The good news is that I made a choice and started working on something. The bad news is that it required a lot of non sewing work, but now I’ve set myself up to have fun at my machine for the next few weeks.

Frost Filigree – Marking Quilting Plan
After putting Frost Filigree in time out and thinking about it for a while, I’ve decided not to worry about the very slight bleeding issues I ran into. Forging forward, the next thing I needed to do was mark out my quilting plan and get the quilt basted, so that’s what I worked on last week. To save my back and hands (using the Hera marker across a full quilt top like this in one day isn’t something my body likes very much), I spread out the marking work over 4 days and worked on it while standing at my cutting station.

Frost Filigree Quilting Plan
My quilting plan is illustrated above, since photographing the Hera marked lines isn’t an easy feat.

Frost Filigree – Finding 2 Missed Marked Quadrants During Basting
After quickly piecing 2 WOF strips together to make the backing, I was eager to get Frost Filigree basted so I can get back to my sewing machine and start quilting. As soon as I laid out the quilt top on the backing, I found 2 quadrants that I didn’t get marked. While doing the marking on the floor isn’t ideal, it didn’t take long to get those quadrants marked so that I could baste the quilt.

Frost Filigree – Basted and Ready for Quilting
I pin basted the quilt top and the spacing is about every 3″. Stepping back and looking at it now, that’s a lot of pins! But I’ll be turning this 60″ square quilt through the throat of my machine a lot, so I am confident it was the right choice.

Frost Filigree – Basted and Ready for Quilting
I have my color matched threads ready and I’m excited to start quilting this week. I’m curious how long this one will take me to quilt and finish; time to find out!
What are you working on this week?

Looks fabulous – and glad you found the quadrants you missed before you sat down to work on it. I am binding Diatom – and so excited about it!
That is a lot of pins, but I understand your thinking, with all the turning that you will do while quilting. Glad you found those two quadrants before you had begun quilting, too. Do you work from the center out when you quilt?
Great quilting plan! I like those tiny none circle areas in the center of some of those circles.
Yvonne – as always you have this planned to a T – it will be gorgeous. Can’t wait to see it!
What great progress! Hope the quilting is life-giving for you!
I like the quilt. You mentioned color coordinated thread, so I’m curious as to the color(s) you will be using for the quilting. Look forward to seeing progress and completion.
This is beautiful! The quilting pattern will really add to the design!
While quilting we can may forget all these things you mentioned…. You will do as always veeery well!! You always do such an exact and excellent quilting!! Take your time … look for your health! Your quilt will be wonderful!
You are a Master of the Hera! I try it sometimes, based on what I read on your website, but I can’t say that I’m very good at it. I love your designed quilting pattern (and the quilt, of course)–another stunner!
Wow, I had no idea you would mark the entire thing up prior with the hera marker! Are you at all concerned during the quilting process the markings would fade?
Its a beautiful design, mesmerizing as always, and I’m sure it’d turn out very beautiful! I’m working on a pretty quilting intensive quilt right now but I’m very excited about it, it’s so pretty I keep pausing to admire it.
It’s so much prep work to get to the fun stuff. But it looks like you’ve got a great plan and are now ready to implement it.
This looks a-maze-ing!
Go you!
