HSTs & Cut Pieces Needed for Piecing #2 – Lap Size, Multi-Color Background

Tip #1: Double check to make sure that your HSTs have been trimmed to 6½” square. The HSTs we made last month were slightly oversized, so trimming the HSTs to size before you begin the Piecing #2 step this month is important!

Tip #2: We will be using the labels on rows 2 and 3 of page 13. If you have lost your label page, simply download the Piecing #1 instructions (there are several links in the email) and print out page 13.

Piecing #2 – Pressing Tip

Tip #3: If you prewashed your fabric, press as desired. If you did NOT prewash your fabric, I recommend pressing stitch and flip units with a dry iron and no starch and no spray water. When working with a dry iron, using a tailor’s clapper or a heavy book to help set the seams is really beneficial!

Piecing #2 – SNF Units – Throw Size, Single Background

Tip #4: On the squares I use for stitch and flip, I like to mark the diagonal line on the wrong side of the fabric. After marking the diagonal line, I measure ½” away and mark the line to sew to create the Bonus HST. I find that the time I take to mark these lines helps with my accuracy.

Piecing #2 – Bonus HSTs – Throw Size, Single Background

TIP #5: If you are going to make the bonus quilt (instructions to piece the bonus quilt will be released in May), don’t skip the step to “square up” the bonus HSTs to 4½” square. I can tell in the photograph above that I took my photo of the bonus HSTs prior to trimming them to size!
