The number of fabrics required for the Star Pulse quilt depends on the size quilt you choose to make. The lap size (which finishes at 60″ x 60″ square) requires 6 fabrics and the throw size (which finishes at 60″ x 72″) requires 8 fabrics.

The other consideration to make when selecting fabrics is if you want to go with the multi-color background or single background option. In the multi-color background option, the thin piecing is consistent throughout the quilt top and the center star and larger piecing areas vary. In the single background option, the center star and thin piecing fabrics vary while the larger piecing areas stay consistent throughout the quilt top.

When selecting your fabrics, keep in mind that the Star Pulse quilt design lends itself best to smaller scale prints; large scale prints (like the large feature prints in a Tula Pink or Anna Maria Horner collection) are not recommended.

To allow plenty of time for your fabric considerations, the next instructions will be released on January 1st, 2024. Fabric Kits

Star Pulse Quilt Along sponsor Stash Fabrics is offering a stunning Kona Cotton multi-color background lap size kit. The kit includes enough fabric to create the bonus quilt (shown to the right above) using the extra half-square triangles created during the piecing steps of the quilt along. Instructions for piecing the bonus quilt will be included at the end of the quilt along.

Star Pulse - String and Story Painters Palette Solids

Star Pulse – String & Story Painters Palette Solids

Star Pulse Quilt Along Sponsor String & Story usually also has a kit to offer, but due to an unexpected family emergency, Holly Anne rightfully dedicated her time and centered taking care of her family. To help support the String & Story family, consider purchasing your fabrics there. I put together a multi-color background option using the Painter’s Palette solids that String & Story stocks. **Be careful when ordering! Orders are in half-yard increments on the String & Story website. So if you need 3 yards, you would need to order a quantity of 6.

For the illustrated Lap Size (60″ x 60″) shown above, you would need: Star Fabric – Honeydew, Background A (BGA) – Tangerine, Background B (BGB) – Burnt Orange, Background C (BGC) – Poppy Red, Background D (BGD) – Sangria, and Background E (BGE) – Fuchsia.

For the illustrated Throw Size (60″ x 72″) shown above, you would need: Star Fabric – Honeydew, Background A (BGA) – Tangerine, Background B (BGB) – Burnt Orange, Background C (BGC) – Poppy Red, Background D (BGD) – Sangria, Background E (BGE) – Fuchsia, Background F (BGF) – Wine, and Background G (BGG) – Bordeaux.

Single Background Colorway (Lap or Throw)

Want to use the Northcott Toscana prints I used for my sample quilt? I have identified online shops that carry all the fabric. Note that I sourced these shops about a week ago, so some of them may have run out of yardage during the Black Friday through Cyber Monday sales period. I’m providing as many options as I can and some may sell out quickly based on demand. Use Background and Star Fabrics A through E for the Lap quilt or Background and Star Fabrics A through G for the Throw quilt. Note that I used Star Fabric F for the binding of my sample throw quilt (shown above).

Phosphor Electric – Multi-Color Background Colorway (Lap)

When I saw Libs Elliot’s Phosphor Electric line, I hoped I would be able to use it to make my second version of Star Pulse during the quilt along. I am really excited by these bright and vibrant colors, and I think they pair perfectly with the design!

The Phosphor Electric prints are bright and beautiful in person; I can’t wait to start sewing with them!

In order to upsize from the lap to the throw size using Phosphor Electric, the colorway needs to be re-worked just a bit.

My mom, Lorna, suggested a lovely palette idea that uses Kona Cotton Hibiscus as the frame for the lap size, and I love the accent of Cactus. I took her idea and expanded it out for the throw size.
