My Diatom QAL Fabric Selection

I am very excited to make my second version of the Diatom quilt during the Diatom quilt along! I will be making the Postage Stamp setting in the throw size this time, and I really cannot wait to dig in and get started.

Many thanks to Moda Fabrics for providing me with two fat eighth bundles of Meander by Aneela Hoey and Moda Bella American Blue and Egghsell. So for anyone else wondering if using two fat eighth bundles instead of a fat quarter bundle will work: it should!

I really love the variety of values that the Meander bundle offers. I’ll be using the American Blue solid as the unifying background yardage and the Egghsell for the unifying star point yardage.

Sorting My FEs/FQs for Blocks

I provided this information in the Fabric Requirements PDF, but if you plan to sew with fat quarter (or fat eighth) bundles, I highly recommend taking your time before the quilt along begins this month to come up with the fabric parings you will use for each block following the information in the fabric requirements PDF. Taking the time to consider the placement of your fabrics now will likely make for a much easier and less frustrating experience as we get into the quilt along next year. I personally then put each grouping into a Ziploc bag and labeled each bag/grouping (Block 1, Block 2, etc.).

And for those wondering, this is my initial mockup for using the Meander bundle. With the fabrics on hand, I did choose to make some substitutions in where my fabric placements will be, so it won’t be EXACTLY like this illustration, but it should be fairly similar.

Are you still considering what fabric you want to use for the quilt along? Let me know if you have any questions that I can help answer as you make your selections.
