I had a lot of fun coming up with bonus quilt design ideas for Night Garden over the weekend, and I’d love to know what you think about what I’ve decided.

Night Garden Throw – 2 Color & Multi
I started out with the Night Garden throw size quilts (shown above as a reference). The Night Garden throw size quilt finishes at 66″ square.

Night Garden Throw Bonus – 2 Color & Multi
I really love how the Night Garden throw bonus quilt design came together! It took several iterations, and I finally settled on this fun 54″ x 63″ bonus throw quilt design. It reminds me of early arcade games like Space Invaders, so I’m going to name it the Space Arcade quilt.

Night Garden Queen – 2 Color & Multi
When making the queen size version of Night Garden (shown above, 90″ x 100″), the extra piecing makes larger scrap sizes than those created to piece the center of the quilt. I puzzled on what do do for a while, and ended up chatting with my friend Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs. Ultimately, her suggestion to offer TWO bonus quilts for the queen size made the most sense to me.

Second Night Garden Queen Bonus Quilt
So, the queen size Night Garden quilt can make a bonus Space Arcade Quilt AND a second 60″ square bonus quilt (shown above). I find that there is a lot to look at in the second bonus quilt (I really love the shape of the negative space in the center of the quilt), and because of the way the different shapes come together, I’m going to name this one the Congruence Quilt.
Ultimately, I was swayed to make a second bonus quilt with the queen size scraps because all of the designs I was coming up with that used ALL of the queen scraps created another queen size quilt. I figured quilters would be ready for something a bit smaller after piecing a large queen size quilt. So, what do you think, did I make the right choice?

I think you made the right choice, great bonus quilt layouts.
Really beautiful, and I can totally see the Space Invaders reference there. I do have to say, I still love the original design the best, but the bonus offer a fun alternative! I’d love to make the original Night Garden sometime probably in a 2-color version, but all those curves do look frightening! Though I’ve made a lot of quilts with curves at this point, I’m still very afraid of them.
You are so clever coming up with these ‘bonus’ designs! And yes, I agree, if I just finished an 80″ or larger quilt, I’d definitely want something a little smaller next. All the options are winners. I really like Space Arcade, but I also am really drawn into Congruence.
So many cool ideas! I am pretty sure you are right about getting a second queen out of a quilt…yikes! The options are terrific…hard to decide which quilt to make in that group!
Your bonus quilts look awesome. Space arcade is the perfect name for your design. I think smaller quilts was a good idea.
The Space Arcade quilts are really fun, especially the multicolored one. That has to be a challenge figuring out what to do with the leftovers, like having the pieces of the puzzle without a picture.
