Rainbow Circle Mini Mini Quilts

After spending a few weeks quilting the Sequenced quilt, I had some computer work to catch up on. Then I second guessed my initial fabric pull for my next project (I’ll share a blog post about that when the replacement fabric arrives), so instead of jumping into another big project, I decided it was time to have the joy of making something from start to finish. So I made two mini mini quilts!

Well, to be honest, one afternoon I made one of these delightful mini mini quilts. My friend Cheryl from Meadow Mist Designs is working on writing her third book, and I sewed up a sample quilt for her. I had some fabric left over, and I really wanted to commemorate the quilt with a small mini mini that I will be able to keep. What I love about the little mini mini is that the squared off circle of colorful Tula Pink prints forms a plus sign in the center (Cheryl’s first book, co-authored with Paige from Quilted Blooms, was Modern Plus Sign quilts).

I was hoping that Cheryl might be interested in receiving a nearly duplicate mini mini to keep in her sewing room, and I was really happy when she did express interest. So the next day I made a second (nearly identical) version in under an hour. So fast and fun! One of these two is now pinned to the wall by my sewing machine where I get to enjoy it every day and the other is on it’s way to Cheryl.

These are the first yellow orchids we have seen blooming on our property. About 2 weeks ago, my husband and I had something unexpected happen that was a hard thing to have to deal with, and just as we were taking a deep breath to ground ourselves and figure out our next step, he looked over to see these lovely orchids blooming. It was peaceful and good for our souls to have them to focus our attention on for a few heartbeats.

I pieced, quilted, and machine bound the mini mini quilts using 50wt Aurifil 2024 (White). All fabrics are Tula Pink prints (even the white background is a white on white print). The mini mini quilts finish at roughly 5¼” square.

One last photo that is meant more to show off the beautiful blue marble tree roots than the mini mini quilts.

  3. So cute, fast finish! Your orchids are gorgeous, and such a pretty spot for a photo shoot.

Minis are really the best way to say hello to a friend and enjoy a quick make – all at the same time!

Hi Yvonne! I don’t think there is anyone that is surprised that Cheryl is interested in having her own mini mini!! Why wouldn’t she want to commemorate the whole experience with something so cute and festive?! She can find a sweet spot to hang it and think of you and your kindness each time she sees it. How big are they when finished? All your photos looks splendid but especially those with the orchids. Thanks so much for linking up for TGIFF! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Whatever it was that caused you and hubs distress, (and I’m NOT asking) I hope it’s passed and I’m sending you big “virtual” hug.
On the other hand, the mini quilts are exceptionally charming in their size and simplicity. The binding sets them off beautifully. And that tree! What kind of tree is it anyway? Is it asking too much for you to post a photo of the entire tree? It’s quite intriguing.

  8. I’ve started making minis from leftovers, rather than stashing them. It’s great to have a reminder of your efforts, even when the quilt itself lives somewhere else.
What kind of tree is that in the last photo? Those roots are awesome!

  9. How cute are those!!
and their photo shoot is amazing!!!

  10. Ooh, you make me want to drop everything and make a mini! These are adorable, and I bet Cheryl is thrilled that one is winging its way to her across the miles. Glad the orchids showed their beautiful faces right when you needed it. I’m also glad you actually noticed it; so often we humans get embroiled in our lives and don’t just NOTICE. Mindfulness is key to… well a LOT, isn’t it.

I think my favorite picture is the one at the top, the minis clipped to the broad leaves. I like the color of the leaves against the bright orange pops in the circle and binding.

I enjoyed reading the story. Which leads me to think about how we mark/commemorate the quilts we make–I usually think that a label slapped on is a good way, along with a good photograph or two, but maybe making a miniature rendition, or replicating a block is also a lovely way? So, thanks.

  12. The mini minis are gorgeous – and a fun (and quick) way to commemorate a fabric line or event. The orchid is lovely – isn’t it great how nature can lift us in a moment, when we aren’t even looking for it?

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
