Piecing #1 – Background Squares
My fist tip when preparing for these first piecing instructions is to pay attention to which background squares you are using in this step. We cut 2 different size squares from the background fabric, and we will be using the larger of the two sizes. All fabric squares used for these instructions will be the same size.
Piecing #1 – Thread Selection
My second tip for Piecing #1 is to put some thought into the color thread you will be using. Because my background color is dark, I selected a matching thread for it, but that thread is very dark compared to my lighter fabrics. So for Piecing #1, I am using the dark thread for the darker half of my half-square triangle units and a lighter thread for the lighter half-square triangle units.
Piecing #1 – Pieced Subunits
With our fabric cut and ready to go, it’s time to start piecing. This month we’re making UNTRIMMED half-square triangle units. Be sure to pay attention to the pressing directions, and after pressing you are done with these instructions. Many of these are intermediate units, so please leave them UNTRIMMED. We will trim final units to their required size later. As noted in the instructions, after piecing the half-square triangles, there will be a few of the squares left over. My completed sub-units and extra squares are shown in the last photo.
