Planview Quilt Along {Fabric Requirements}

As an engineer, I created plans to communicate how to manufacture parts that I developed. Plans are two-dimensional diagrams used to describe an object and communicate building and/or fabrication instructions. A plan view is a projection looking down on the object, like in a floor plan for a house. This design started by overlapping various sizes of rotated plus shapes and the end result strongly reminded me of the plan view of the John C. Hodges library (the library of my college alma mater), resulting in the name of the design.

Planview - Lap Size Quilt

Planview – Lap Size Quilt

The Planview quilt requires 6 fabrics: a background fabric (BG) and 5 fabrics for the central design (Fabrics A-E). For my sample lap size quilt, I opted to move around the color wheel for my central fabrics and use a contrasting fabric for the background.

The pattern is written using the colorway of the lap size quilt that I sewed up earlier this year. When selecting your fabrics keep in mind that the Planview design lends itself best to small scale, non-directional prints.

To allow plenty of time for your fabric considerations, the next set of instructions will be released on January 5th, 2022. If you haven’t joined yet, you can do so at any time by purchasing the Planview Quilt Along. The Cool (Green) Progression is color matched to the sample lap quilt that I pieced. It uses:

Note that you should not feel constrained to stick to a particular color order; I rearranged placement for the Lava colorway (switching the C and D fabrics in color progression order) because I like the way the design looked better when I used the coloring page!

Other Colorway Options

Planview Sample Quilt Fabric - Northcott Fabrics

Planview Sample Quilt Fabric – Northcott Fabric

Want to use the Northcott Fabric prints I used for my sample quilt? I have identified online shops that carry all the fabric. Note that I sourced these shops a few months ago and some of them only have a little yardage remaining. I’m providing as many options as I can and some may sell out quickly based on demand.

Quilter’s Cupboard – Ontario, Canada

KTR Sewing Center – Manitoba, Canada

Quilter’s Candy Shop – Nebraska, USA **Note: They sell in half yard increments

Other Stores in the US that Carry Fabrics A-E

Always Quilting – California

Burkholder Fabrics – Pennsylvania

Another option to consider: use a single fabric for both D and E, like I did for the berry colorway shown above. If you like this option, remember to add the yardages for Fabric D and E together to get enough fabric!

Evergreen Colorway

Another option to consider: Use the same fabric for Fabric A and the Background Fabric, like I did for the Evergreen colorway shown above. If you like this option, remember to add the yardages for Fabric and the Background Fabric together to get enough fabric!

What size and colorway are you planning to sew? Are you looking for something in particular that you don’t see above? If you have questions about selecting your fabrics, leave a comment and I will either email you back with suggestions or run an updated post with more colorway options depending on the number of requests I receive. Another great option is to share your fabric selections in the Quilting Jetgirl Facebook group; the group is great for providing feedback and encouragement during the quilt along!

  1. Looking forward to playing along! I have some teals I wanted to do something with and I think they will work well. Have a little fabric prep (washing) to do before I finalize size and colors.

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
