I got a bit distracted over the weekend by the scraps from piecing the Sesen curve star blocks. I love that the scraps created by my patterns that use curve star blocks can be quickly transformed into another quilt (the Sky Full of Stars pattern also offers the Hang On bonus pattern and the Pistils & Pollen pattern also offers the Bonus Boquet bonus pattern).
Sesen Scraps for Bonus Quilt
My stack of scraps (Kona Coral and Kumquat) waiting to be turned into something new for Sesen sent me looking at my stash to pick out a background fabric. I have 3 options that stood out to me, and I’m curious to know which you would pick.
Bonus Quilt Background – Option A Basil
The first option is Kona Basil, which I felt could offset the warm colors nicely.

The second option that caught my eye was Kona Purple, which seems to make the warm colors have a lot of energy.

And the third option is Kona Burgundy, which would keep the color story closer to an analogous scheme.

I also created a quick illustration mockup to help me evaluate how the colors work together, because those tiny swatches don’t necessarily give a great perspective. I’d love to know: which would you chose for the background and why?
Boy, all three of those colors are great. I’d probably go with the burgundy, only because it’s unusual to me, and I just finished a quilt with Kona Deep Purple, which was fun and really made the colors pop. The burgundy gives an interesting intensity.
I like the burgundy background for two reasons – 1) because it just appeals to me more, looks more pleasing to my eye, and 2) because there’s more value contrast so your featured motif in the bright colors will be more prominent against the deeper background. PS – you have a transparency palette going there, too.
I also like the burgundy best. The green is too loud, and the purple seems to clash.
I think all three look good but I would go for the green. I like the bright contrast. I’d probably lay out multiple rows first to see if that is really what I want. It will be interesting to see what you choose.
Choice C rocks. It just seems a little unexpected.
I would go for the purple, I think it makes the colors pop in a pleasing way to me.
I like anything green however in this case I think the burgundy marries the colours together for a more eye pleasing appearance.
I vote for burgundy. Curious to see what you choose.
Usually I would head straight for the purple, but the green is very Florida orange orchard in November. Leafy, citrus and maybe a gator lurking nearby.
I’m not good at picking colors from screens, so I will leave that to you. But I MUST comment on those incredibly smooth curved seams. You get a gold star!
