After I made my initial 4 blocks for the group quilt project that I’m a part of, I knew that if I waited a little bit that I’d be inspired when I saw what others in the group were making. They didn’t disappoint in offering up a lot of inspiration!

Inspired by the blocks that Faye created, I started by using up scraps that were left behind from making the bias tape for the rainbow block and created a flying geese type block. Then I inset that into the background colors using curves and added a pieced stem. This block is greatly oversized, and I’m thinking it could be cut down into a narrow strip or trimmed at a wonky angle.

Since I’ll be sending these blocks off to the group to noodle on how to best assemble everything, I also wanted to include a handful of pieces that might come in handy for transition when pulling everything together.

Hopefully some of what I have pieced together will just what they need when they assemble the quilt top. If not, I had a fun day of improvisational piecing!
Group Quilt Blocks
All 10 of my oversized blocks are ready for me to mail off. With the rate that everyone is getting vaccinated, I know the group is hopeful that they will be able to safely get together to work on the quilt top together. Fingers crossed that can happen!
That tile is on my list of to be removed from our cottage. It exists only in the kitchen (which is going to be gutted) and bathroom, and the dirty grout has been scrubbed and clorox washed and still makes me shudder. All in good time (wish us luck that it’s only lightly glued down and pops up easily!). For now, it’s a decent backdrop for some quilt block photography. Lighting in the cottage is a bit of a photography challenge: we have really large eaves so that we can keep the windows open while it is raining, but it blocks a LOT of natural light during the day.
These blocks are quite fun!
I’m really curious what ‘oversized’ means – ? AND what is the prompt you were working with? Beautiful blocks at any rate.
Oversized: I did not trim to exactly 3 1/2, 6 1/2, or 9 1/2 on any size.
Prompts:
1. All blocks will finish at 3″, 6″, or 9″ on any side (3 1/2″, 6 1/2″, or 9 1/2″ unfinished).
2. All blocks will have a curve. The curve can be done via piecing, applique, bias tape, or any other desired method.
3. Each block will use lime green and a background color.
I love the “punch” the lime green gives them; it’s gorgeous!
I do hope you all will have been vaccinated soon as I understand the desire to see one another again. My group has been doing Zoom get togethers, but it’s just not the same. Almost all of us are vaccinated (we have one holdout who’s afraid) and I’m getting my 2nd shot next week, so we’re excited! We’re more than ready for a group hug!
