Fussy Cut Block {Old School BOM}

Today, Missie Carpenter (Traditional Primitives) will be releasing the next block in the Old School Block of the Month series, so today I am sharing the block that I made based on Quilt Jane‘s instructions LAST month for the Fussy Cut block.

I had previously decided to work with my stash of Carolyn Friedlander’s prints to make these blocks, but Carolyn’s prints do not really lend themselves to the kind of large scale fussy cutting that Jane discussed for the center of the quilt. However, I did meticulously plan and cut the outer border to keep the triangles pointing in the same direction.

I also don’t happen to have a lot of large scale prints in my stash to pull from, but with my fingers crossed, I started digging around in my bins. I came across Rise Fly by Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society in Bright Blue, and I knew it would pair well with Carolyn’s prints. Whew! I liked that I could find the same repeat in both the white and dark blue. I considered how to arrange them and when I rotated each block by 90 degrees, I liked how the center created a wreath like shape.

    You’re right about CF fabrics not really including those large-scale prints, but I think you found a good alternative. I really like the center ‘wreath’ as well!

  2. Glad you found something in the stash that could work for the centre. I like the connection to the first two with your cornerstones fabric.

    Fun blocks. I’ve not done much fussy quilting myself but am always impressed with the results others are able to get!

  4. Well done. Your quilt will be such a crisp, modern take on these blocks. Love the blues with the rust and brown tones.
