Variable Star Block {Old School BOM}

Today, Quilt Jane will be releasing the next block in the Old School Block of the Month series, so it’s only fitting that I share the block that I made based on Nancy Scott from Masterpiece Quilting‘s instructions LAST month for the Variable Star block.

As I mentioned in my post about the first block (Patched Friendship Star Block), I’ll be using my stash of Carolyn Friedlander prints for this BOM project. Because we are making another star block this month, I again went looking for a set of fabrics with value contrast and in colors to compliment the first month’s block. I really like the low volume leaf print (the bottom of the photo above).

Nancy offered a variation on the Variable Star Block to include a signature panel in the center of the star. I’ve seen many creative uses of that area in blocks made by those sewing along: from embroidery documenting the year to additional piecing detail, it’s been fun to see the creativity. I’m personally thinking I will quilt some details in that section when the time comes.

Like I said, I’m pretty smitten with that low volume print, so I couldn’t help myself with a sidelong view showing off the block detail a bit more.

Two blocks done, and I’m looking forward to getting the instructions for the next block today!

    Any block made with Carolyn’s fabric makes me happy!

    While I enjoy working with solids, I too have recently found myself gravitating towards low contrast and low volume fabrics, especially for background fabrics. The fabrics for both months is wonderful and when I showed them to my husband he said, “Oh, I like those sketchy fabrics. I think you need some of that.” Smiling, I went to my stash and pulled the cuts of Archetextures Grid Plaid that I recently purchased. It’s good to be prepared. 🙂

  3. Great blocks and fun fabrics!

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
