In preparing workshops for QuiltCon Together, I made several class samples that I have yet to share here on my blog. Going through the workshops with attendees last weekend reminded me of these fun projects.
Mini Mini Quilts – QuiltCon Together Workshop Samples
While the mini mini quilt workshop is an invitation to have fun and use up your scraps, I also talk about some principles of quilt design and how to think through the creation process when the decision of what to make is left entirely up to you.
Techno Trousers – Mini Mini Quilt Workshop Sample
One of the prompts I suggest is to interview someone and find out about their likes and dislikes. I spoke with my mother-in-law and was inspired to make the ex-NASA techno trousers from Wallace & Gromit. They were great fun to make and even more fun to surprise my mother-in-law with!
Pacific Grove Tree – Thread Painting Workshop Sample
I prepared for and filmed my last workshop, Thread Painting, for QuiltCon Together while we were preparing for moving to Hawaii. I decided to use the workshop sample to help me take a memory of my favorite part of California with me, a tree from the Pacific Grove coastline.
Note that I was especially excited to get to teach Thread Painting during QuiltCon Together because it allowed everyone to have access to their home machines and learn what settings, thread, needles, and other tools work best for them. It was such a delight to get to see all the great work that everyone made during the event!

If my husband and I won the lottery (we’d have to buy tickets to win, but I digress), we would purchase a home in Pacific Grove. Since that’s not going to happen, I opted to use a photograph I took of a stunning tree along the coast there and turn it into my class sample for the workshop.

I love how double sided thread paintings can be! And note that I used the facing tutorial by Audrey from Cotton and Bourbon to finish this mini quilt.

I really like your Pacific Grove Tree. What a lovely reminder of a place I loved to visit when we lived in the San Jose area. You made my day brighter already. 🙂
These are so inspiring! Thread painting is something I want to explore more, both on my longarm and with my domestic machine. Is there any fabric appliqué behind your tree, or is it 100% thread painted? The thread painting I have done before enhances appliqué, which makes it less intimidating for me.
All you minis are really fun. The techno trousers is just too cool and the tree is just gorgeous.
What interesting samples. The Techno Trousers are very cool especially with the information attached to them. I love the Pacific Coast tree and feel like I’m right there in one of those groves. I can feel the way the wind has formed the tree. There is a lot to be said to having a class via zoom so that I could use my own supplies, sewing machine, etc. Were the classes downloadable for the students so they could review them again?
These are all adorable. I especially like the techno trousers which I initially thought were the bottom half of a leprechaun ( duh!), and your natural backgrounds are beautiful! They really set off the individual pieces.
I chuckled at your comment about lottery tickets. It reminded me of an old, silly joke; so please forgive me in advance:
John wanted to win the lottery, so he prayed every night saying, “Dear God, please let me win the lottery!” Night after night he prayed, again and again, the same request. Finally one night, as he was praying he heard a soft voice. John whispered, “God…..is that You?”; “Yes John, it is I”. John responds, “Dear God, please, PLEASE let me win the lottery, I’ve been waiting and praying for so long!” There is a long pause. Finally, with a heavy sigh, God says, “John,… John,… John, my son; PLEASE, give me a break, BUY… A… TICKET!”

What a wonderful set of mini minis! Wallace and Gromit ROCK!! I’ve seen all their films, more than once. Terrific British humour and wondrous animation. I recognized the techno trousers immediately. Well done on all of them.

Fun post Yvonne. The cypress tree is beautiful. Ray and I often spend our ‘lottery winnings’ too. But like you, we need to buy a ticket to make this happen. Hahaha.
Wow! I love the thread painting sample. It does a good job of capturing the inspiration tree, and reminds me of a windy day in Pacific Grove. I grew up there, and mostly remember the fog and the wind, which explains the shape of so many of the trees. Yes, one would need to win the lottery to live there now. Lovely thread painting, and thanks for the memory.
