I am squeaking in right under the wire to get my first block made as part of the 2021 Old School Block of the Month. Kim shared her tutorial for the Patched Friendship Star block on January 12th, and the next block (designed by Nancy Scott from Masterpiece Quilting) will be shared today. It took me longer to come up with a plan for my fabrics for the year and make my initial fabric pull than it did to piece the first block. 🙂

January Fabric Pull
I have a healthy stash of Carolyn Friedlander prints, and my goal will be to use them to piece the blocks throughout the year. Because the first block was a star, I leaned toward looking for yellow/yarrow prints, and after several fabric pulls, I ended up with the nice grouping above. I was looking for a balance of both color and value in my selections, and I struggled to differentiate value with the yellow prints.

January Piecing Thread
I opted to use 50wt Aurfil in 2312 (Ermine) to piece the block. I may choose to color match my piecing thread for the remaining blocks or I might just fall back to my normal use of 2600 (Dove), which is a light gray. Time will tell!

Patched Friendship Star
By selecting fabrics with a range of value and considering their placement in the block, I really like the end result.
I’m looking forward to seeing what Nancy has to share with us today. Are you sewing along, too?

Are you going to be using Caroline Friedlander fabric for all your blocks? I have a large stash of CF fabric also and would love to follow along with you in making stars for the year.
\You did good with your fabric pull. I like your block!
Great pull, as always. I especially like the yarrow colour and the way you balanced it with the paler fabrics.
Lovely first block. Can’t go wrong with a mix of CF prints!
Hmm no I haven’t been sewing along though it sure is tempting now I’ve seen your star block! I don’t have a lot of yellow but having made my pixelated scraps block I came to see and like it a lot more and now your block adds to that like and interest!
love the fabrics!
