I took some time “off” from technical editing over Thanksgiving week in order to make a quilt. It was time to turn the Sesen quilt design into a real quilt (72 inches square prior to first wash)! It took me 20 hours and 45 minutes over 6 days, and I already know that I’ll be making a second version of this quilt.

Because the quilt was made on commission, I used a quick all over stipple for the quilting. It left the quilt soft, cuddly, and full of wonderful drape after it was washed the first time (note all the photos taken of the quilt shared in this post were taken pre-wash).

I used Kona Cottons in Blueprint (background, and backing), Periwinkle (piecing and binding), Canary, and Maize. For the piecing, quilting, and attaching the binding, I used 50wt Aurifil 2725 (light wedgewood), which blends in beautifully with the Kona Periwinkle.

I love the shapes created by the negative space in Sesen; I feel like I see something new every time. Sesen means, “A lotus flower. This is a symbol of the sun, of creation and rebirth.”
I couldn’t help but compile a video of the piecing magic as Sesen came together. Time for me to consider what colors I’d like to explore in the next version!
Just beautiful!! The colors, the design! I love Modern Quilting but this design has echoes of traditional quilt blocks and is just lovely!!!

I love this! I think the stipple is perfect for the use of the quilt, but I can almost feel your desire to quilt it “your” way. Looking forward to version 2 and the quilting that you select for it.
