Curated Quilts – Half-Square Triangles

When Amy reached out to me to ask permission to include Oh Happy Day in the upcoming Curated Quilts – Half-Square Triangles edition, I was more than happy to say yes. Oh Happy Day is pieced using a wide variety of quilt blocks, but it definitely relies on Half-Square Triangles. More than anything, though, this quilt felt timely all over again. Back in 2016 when I was piecing the quilt top, I used bright colors that made me feel cheerful (the quilt uses Kona Cotton solids in Shell and Mango, which were supplied by Robert Kaufman Fabrics). At that time I learned that Robert Kaufman was renaming two of their solids in the process. What used to be called Pale Flesh is now Shell – Oh Happy Day!

I later noted the names of the color matched Aurifil threads I had used in the quilting, and the thread that I thought blended best with Shell was #2420 (Fleshy Pink). As a result of learning that Robert Kaufman was making changes, I reached out to Aurifil and they quickly made the decision to rename 3 of their thread colors as well. What used to be called Flesh (2205) is now Apricot, Pale Flesh (2315) is now Shell, and Fleshy Pink (2420) is now Blush.

Oh Happy Day – Curated Quilts – Half-Square Triangles

I’m grateful for the changes that were made in 2016, and it is a good reminder to me about the power of speaking up and asking. And today, my sentiments from then feel more true than ever: we all need a Happy Day. And what better thing than a quilt to spread love and hugs when it is needed most. Regardless of what you are sewing or doing, I hope you are able to find something to claim your own moment of happy today.
