Just before Thanksgiving last year, I submitted a few quilt designs to the Modern Quilt Guild to consider for their upcoming Modern Monthly series, and I was thrilled when one of my designs was selected to be featured as the quilt design for March 2020. It’s my pleasure to introduce you today to Rock Candy.
Rock Candy is a design I created after spending an afternoon with my nieces, who each delighted in the simple treat of a lollipop. The design evolved as I thought about the rounded edges that can become sharp in your mouth, especially when choosing to chew a candy instead of slowly savoring it.
Modern Monthly is a collection of patterns, webinars and resources curated by the Modern Quilt Guild. The MQG’s mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community. Each month, MQG members can access new, free modern quilting patterns designed by other members. Rock Candy is part of Issue 04 and is available to MQG members to download today!
To help unify the Modern Monthly ascetic, a color palette is selected for each quarter. I was provided with Moda Bella solids in Horizon Blue, Pomegranate, Amelia Pink, Seafoam, Avocado, Zen Grey, and Charcoal along with Warm & White batting from the Warm Company.
I densely quilted Rock Candy with matchstick quilting on my Juki domestic machine using matching 50wt Aurifil thread: 4182 (Dark Turquoise) to match Horizon Blue, 2250 (Red) to match Pomegranate, 2423 (Baby Pink) to match Amelia Pink, 5006 (Light Turquoise) to match Seafoam, 2887 (Very Dark Olive) to match Avocado, 2600 (Dove) to match Zen Grey, and 4241 (Very Dark Grey) to match Charcoal.
Because the Modern Monthly is released at the beginning of each quarter, I’m thrilled to get to share with you a recent finish by São Paulo Modern Quilt Guild member @magevignola!
Thinking about the lollipops that inspired the quilt design, I wanted something to represent the sticks, so I designed the quilt for each block to use Zen Grey. When selecting your color palette, consider looking for colors that match your favorite lollipops or hard candy treats.
