I decided to tackle basting the River Antoine Mini Quilt, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had enough floor space to baste it inside Wabi-Sabi Overland.

The floor space is tight, as you can see. Our pull-out chest refrigerator is to the far left in the image, our kitchen is at the top of the image with our kitchen pantry on the far upper right, and our dinette can be seen at the bottom of the image. What’s important is that I was able to get it basted, quilted, and bound in an afternoon!

I free motion quilted the mini quilt in an all over swirl flower pattern using 50wt Aurifl 2870 (Green) thread, which I also used to create the binding roll and hand stitch the binding down to the back of the quilt.

The mini quilt finishes at 24-inches across from flat to flat or 27-inches across from point to point.

I opted to use a bias binding to help work around the 60-degree angles of the quilt top.

My husband gamely helped me find some nice branches at our campsite the day after my finish and held the quilt up for the finished photographs. We used some branches to keep the quilt flat and weighed down the lower two corners with taped on rocks. A bit of safety wire tied off to a longer branch and we were set for the photography session! Mostly we were glad that the gusty wind didn’t peel the tape off and send the mini quilt flying away or tumbling into Quill Creek.

I love the way you got the pictures of the quilt! Not something I would have thought of, but you both stepped up to the plate and made it work. My cousin & her husband are traveling the National Parks and she is finding ways to quilt in her trailer.

I was WONDERING how you made it appear to be flying in mid-air. How clever you are!! It’s a lovely piece and your quilting is cool. I love rich jewel colors like those you used.
Seeing you “pretzeled” on the floor in that small space while basting was painful (for me anyway). At my age, if I tried that, you’d need a crane to lift me out of there as I’d not be able to “un-pretzel” after being in that position long enough to do it! (giggles!)
