River Antoine Mini Quilt Finish

I decided to tackle basting the River Antoine Mini Quilt, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had enough floor space to baste it inside Wabi-Sabi Overland.

The floor space is tight, as you can see. Our pull-out chest refrigerator is to the far left in the image, our kitchen is at the top of the image with our kitchen pantry on the far upper right, and our dinette can be seen at the bottom of the image. What’s important is that I was able to get it basted, quilted, and bound in an afternoon!

I free motion quilted the mini quilt in an all over swirl flower pattern using 50wt Aurifl 2870 (Green) thread, which I also used to create the binding roll and hand stitch the binding down to the back of the quilt.

The mini quilt finishes at 24-inches across from flat to flat or 27-inches across from point to point.

I opted to use a bias binding to help work around the 60-degree angles of the quilt top.

My husband gamely helped me find some nice branches at our campsite the day after my finish and held the quilt up for the finished photographs. We used some branches to keep the quilt flat and weighed down the lower two corners with taped on rocks. A bit of safety wire tied off to a longer branch and we were set for the photography session! Mostly we were glad that the gusty wind didn’t peel the tape off and send the mini quilt flying away or tumbling into Quill Creek.

That is beautiful, and a perfect way to show this mini off without anyone having to hold it. So glad to hear that neither of you had to go fishing or swimming for it and you two always find interesting spots and ideas for showing off your beautiful designs. I can’t wait to see what the two of you come up with next.

  2. Glad that you were able to find a solution for basting, right at your feet 🙂 Of course, I enjoy the photo shoots with peeks at your adventures. Pretty quilt, Yvonne!

You travelers have really put on the miles and seen great things this summer! Love seeing how creative you got with your photography with this cute little piece.

  4. Your ingenuity never ceases to impress! Thanks for showing the fishing stick – was dying to see how you managed to shoot it floating in air! Also – LOVED your last communique from your travels. It’s a big small world, and it seems expeditionary travelers are a wonderful community, much like makers. Thanks for sharing all of it with us.

Beautiful little quilt. And love the ingenious photo shoot. I thought maybe it was taped to a window – ha! Glad to see you are managing doing a little sewing now and then.

I love the way you got the pictures of the quilt! Not something I would have thought of, but you both stepped up to the plate and made it work. My cousin & her husband are traveling the National Parks and she is finding ways to quilt in her trailer.

  7. Your photo shoot really made me smile! I’m constantly worried about quilts blowing into the water. And I loved seeing you basting in your tiny floor space 🙂

Your creativity and ingenuity make me smile. You sure have that ‘can do’ attitude! So thankful that you shared the River Antoine Mini Quilt with us.

Fun mini. I like the way you did the photo with wires!

I was WONDERING how you made it appear to be flying in mid-air. How clever you are!! It’s a lovely piece and your quilting is cool. I love rich jewel colors like those you used.
Seeing you “pretzeled” on the floor in that small space while basting was painful (for me anyway). At my age, if I tried that, you’d need a crane to lift me out of there as I’d not be able to “un-pretzel” after being in that position long enough to do it! (giggles!)

Fun quilt and interesting pictures! Thanks for showing how you did it.

Amen to what everyone else has said. And thank you for letting us see backstage: I kept wondering as I looked at your terrific little quilt, how it was suspended near that rushing stream. And as Suzanne noted, Kudos as well, for being able to “unpretzel” yourself after the basting!

A lovely finish and how clever of you to make it just the right size for the available bit of floor. The photos are awesome – well worth the bother of figuring out how to do them.
