I met Sheila Christensen when I participated in the Cotton Cuts mystery charity quilt in 2017. While Sheila, who lives in New Zealand and blogs at Mystery Quilter, loves creating Mystery Quilts, she also owns a quilt shop, teaches, and is also now an author. Today, I am looking forward to introducing you to her first book, Quilts with an Angle.
What I love about Sheila’s approach in Quilts with an Angle is that she walks you through how to use 60-degree lines on your ruler and other 60-degree specialty rulers giving you access and knowledge that you can use with almost any ruler you have in your collection. Sheila opens the door of opportunity to those confident with basic piecing of squares, rectangles, and half-square triangles and gives you the language and tools to piece triangles, hexagons, diamonds and more!
To be perfectly honest, what had me swooning the most are the quick reference charts for cutting based on strip widths and straight rulers. I do love my equilateral triangle calculator, but it does not have the scope of shapes available in this book and reference tables can be used offline! Sheila even has tabulated cutting tables for cutting directional prints. Swoon!

Court and Spark
There are 15 quilt patterns to choose from ranging from beginner, to intermediate, to advanced. There is also a discussion on how to design your own 60-degree blocks, for those of us who like to explore new concepts in design as well as piecing.

I’d love to know, have you ever pieced 60-degree shapes? I’m certainly thankful for the tips that Sheila shares in Quilts with an Angle because I know I am going to be more confident the next time I do as a result.

I have made a 60 degree quilt once a few years ago. I think my overall technique has improved, so maybe time to try again, as it wasn’t quite 100% correct sized at the end, that first time around.
have made several 60 degree projects, love to try new things. This looks like a super book
I’ve made a few quilts with my 60 degree triangle ruler and love them!
I’m working on a 60 degree triangle quilt at the moment and would love the chance to win a copy of this book.
You bet I have! Many of Bethany Reynolds’ Stack n Whack quilt patterns I’ve made have 60 degree triangles and they are a snap to sew and to add to one’s quilting repertoire! This looks like a great book and oh yes swoon on the tables you speak of! What a great idea to include.
I currently have a One Block Wonder quilt on my design wall. It is made using a 60 degree angle. The half hexies are made but have not been sewn into rows yet.
I haven’t given them a try, but I love the way they look!
I started a One Block Wonder once, but stalled out and it sits in my UFO pile now. haven’t done much with triangles since.
I have made a couple of 60 degree triangle quilts, and have just finished Sheila’s “Mini Wonders” pattern published last year in “Make Modern”. Her instructions were perfect, and it all came together wonderfully. I hope to learn more, and have more wonderful practice material in this book
I haven’t used my 60 degree rulers…yet….
I participated in the ZENChic modern triangle quilt along and with it, my first 60 degree quilt. Loved it.
This book looks like a fun way to try 60 degree triangle quilts!
I have not previously made a 60° angle quilt, but i’m up for the challenge! Would love to try it. Please count me in for the giveaway opportunity. Thanks!
I have not sewn a 60* angle quilt but I love all sorts of geometric shapes and would love to try…. with the excellent guidance of this book that is! Thanks for the giveaway.
I’m the person who buys the rulers and then doesn’t know what to do with them. I may have tried 60 or maybe it was 45 blocks using the ruler, but given up! Somehow they seemed to be the mirror image of themselves
I’m working on a quilt with scrappy 60 degree triangles, looking at the projects in Sheila’s book I’ve got plenty of room for improvement and exploration!
I have made a few triangle quilts and LOVE them – they are so much fun and hers are quite unique! I like that!
Go the Kiwis! I met Sheila briefly last weekend at my Quilt Guild exhibition where she was a vendor. I name dropped and said I had seen her book on your blog!
