Splendid Sampler II – Figure 8

Welcome to the last week of the Splendid Sampler 2 sew along! It has been a really fun journey for me. I was excited and honored to be asked to contribute to the book (Balancing Reflection), and I have really enjoyed making the 42 unique blocks that I have pieced along the way. I feel like my small piecing accuracy has improved as a result of the process, and I am looking forward to considering how to assemble the blocks together to make a special lap quilt for myself.

For the last week, I chose to piece Figure 8 by Jane Davidson, but I opted to leave off the applique so that I could instead feature the cat astronauts one more time in the piecing.

Splendid Sampler II – All 42 Blocks

Here is a collage of my collection of 42 blocks. I do not plan to set them in a traditional 6 x 7 grid; the quilt would only be 36″ x 42″ without sashing. I’m thinking of adding more negative space. I definitely need some time to play and evaluate my options.

Be sure to visit The Splendid Sampler website to see the other blocks revealed today. And if you are sewing along, don’t forget to link up (on The Splendid Sampler site) your pieced version of any of the blocks from today’s reveal to be entered to win a prize.

I love seeing all of your blocks together, and well done on keeping up!!! I love your idea of playing with negative space, and could absolutely see a supernova burst type thing with all of the white-backed squares (and added white negative space and filler blocks to make it look like an explosion), exploding into the darker background (with the dark background blocks scattered throughout). I am sure that you will come up with a stunning setting for the blocks, and look forward to seeing it. No rush, of course! I think I’m giving myself a 2-3 year goal to finishing mine, simply because I know how packed my life is. My #1 goal now is to maintain forward momentum and continue chipping away at the final blocks and filler blocks. <3 I hope your travel prep is going well, and am sending all sorts of smooth travel and adventure vibes your way! You're amazing!

Your fabric choice is turning out to be the key for this quilt. Beautiful and fun – the eye just keeps traveling from this block to that, back and around again. What a keepsake you’re making!

  5. I can’t wait to see how you do this! The negative space will be fun and boy are these terrific blocks. It is really fun to see a collage of them all. I love the way you kept the pictures all the same too, it really was fun watching these come together these past 42 weeks!

I agree with the commenter who said your fabric choices are key to how well this has worked out. Your blocks look fabulous en masse and I am fascinated to see how you decide to set them. Negative space will give you the chance to add some fancy quilting!
