2019 Finished Quilts

Butterfly Inspiration Mini Quilt Finish

When I shared the Butterfly Inspiration Mini Quilt in January, I knew it would be a while before I had time to get back to quilt and finish it. This week I was able to put the finishing touches on the mini quilt, and I really love how it finished.

For the quilting, I started by drawing a long, continuous line between the rows of reverse applique shapes in the center with my Hera marker. I quilted along the drawn line and then used the width of my presser foot as a guide to quilt the rest of the background.

I color matched blue 50wt Aurifil to each of the blue sections in the reverse applique and used different quilting motifs to give varying texture and dimension to the mini quilt. I love the texture that is created from the combination of the reverse applique and quilting and it is a very satisfying quilt to touch as a result.

I backed the mini quilt with a fun remnant from Christa Watson’s first fabric line for Benartex, Modern Marks, and the binding is the darkest Kona cotton used in the piecing, Ocean. The mini quilt finished at 18 3/4″ wide by 12 1/4″ tall.

  7. I love the quilting on this. It really works perfectly with the deconstructed butterfly wings (although that doesn’t sound quite as good as I mean)

This has a lovely organic feel – if I didn’t know the butterfly connection it might make me think of pebbles in water.
