QuiltCon 2019 Entries Update

Everyone who submitted quilts for consideration to QuiltCon 2019 received email notifications yesterday morning about whether their quilts were accepted this year or not. Over the years, I have submitted many more quilts that have not been accepted to QuiltCon than quilts that have been accepted, so I want to start by saying to anyone who has submitted a quilt that was not accepted to a quilt show, congratulations for making a quilt you were so proud of that you took a risk and submitted it to be juried into a quilt show. That is awesome!

QuiltCon in particular is a very competitive quilt show. I believe there were around 1,750* quilts submitted for consideration this year, and only 400* of the quilts will be on display (*these are close estimates to the best of my knowledge). With that in mind, I have experimented with submitting lots of quilts in a year (last year I submitted 8 for consideration) and this year I experimented with submitting a very curated grouping of quilts (I submitted 4 for consideration). I also tried something new: I submitted each quilt when it was complete or back in my possession. I’m never 100% sure when magazine quilts will be returned, so I figure it’s best to wait until they are home again.

So here are the submission dates for each of my 4 submitted quilts this year. The interesting thing to note here are the quilt numbers that were assigned to my entries, given at the end.

  1. Babsie, upper left, submitted August 15, #68
  2. See Right Through Me, upper right, submitted September 6, #90
  3. Refraction, lower left, submitted November 8, #418
  4. Wonder, lower right, submitted November 24, #726

The submission deadline is November 30th, and over 1,000 quilts were submitted after Wonder on November 24th. Wow!

I am in a bit of shock to say that all four of my quilts were accepted this year. I really and truly was not expecting that to happen (I was, however, hoping that one might get selected to show)!

I cannot stress enough that amazing quilts are not accepted to QuiltCon every year. Quilts that do not get accepted to QuiltCon one year may very well be selected the next year as pointed out by Timna Tarr yesterday. Christa Watson has a great post with suggestions for other quilt shows to consider. And Victoria’s Accepted or Rejected post from 2014 is something I read every year.

I do look forward to seeing the quilts at QuiltCon 2019, but more than anything, I look forward to seeing quilters there in person. I’ll be on the crew working in the workshop area, so if you are there, keep an eye out for me!

Yvonne, hi, i’m no where anywhere near submitting a quilt to anything, [and i doubt if i ever will be!!!]. However, it just totally warms my heart that even, or especially, in the midst of your own joy and surprise at having 4 quilts accepted, you have made the accent in you reaction on everyone elses feelings. i guess it isn’t so surprising that your quilts captivate my heart so much, your person does even more.
    thank you, shoshana

Awesome! Congratulations on having 4 quilts accepted! Your quilts are so pretty. I like the “refraction” one the best. Blue is my favorite color, with green being my second favorite :-). Enjoy your holidays!! 🙂 🙂

I am thrilled that all of your quilts were accepted! They will really make a solid contribution to this year’s cohort of quilts. Yippee!!!

  6. Linda says:

  7. That’s amazing news, Yvonne! Congrats on all four making it in!

Congrats I love your blog. So nice to here the process that goes into Quiltcon. I find it fascinating what goes into submitting
the quilts. Have a Merry Christmas

Congrats all around!!! You do very graphic work that always challenges our view of quilting. See Right Through Me is one of my favorites.

  11. Congratulations, Yvonne! That’s very exciting (and also exactly what I said I’d accept, if I remember correctly, lol!). The number of quilts entered is amazing.

  12. How awesome, Yvonne. I understand why the MQG accepted all your entries. All four pieces are so well designed and executed with nothing superfluous. Congratulations! I wish I were going to Nashville. I do plan to go to Austin. Hopefully I’ll see you and some of your new work there! Take care, Mary.

Really awesome news … so very exciting for you, to have these four accepted out of such a large entry pool! Congrats!

Yvonne, how exciting is that! It proves that your hard work and attention to detail are being rewarded.
Thank you also for the link to Victoria’s post – following her now.
Working away on my modern quilt, hoping for State Fair entry, but if not I will love it all the same.
Modern to me means unrestrained. When I make a modern quilt top, it is the same process a when I used to paint, it is free flow, stream of consciousness with only a vague idea of the end result.

Well that’s wonderful, and it is VERY interesting about the numbers your quilts were assigned! I have always submitted all of mine in the last week, right before the deadline…. Anyway, I’ll look for your quilts at QC – and you too! Congrats!

  16. Liz says:

Congratulations! So happy to hear your news… I love all your submissions.

  17. janequiltsslowly says:

Congratulations! These are all wonderful quilts, so I am not surprised that they were juried in.

I had heard that submitting earlier is a good idea because once a category is full, the judges have to bump a quilt they have accepted to put the later entry in. That must be a much harder decision to make.

Also thanks for the link to Victoria’s blog post because it has a really great perspective and the discussion in the comments is interesting too!

  18. Congrats again! I can’t wait to see them hanging at QuiltCon!

  19. So looking forward to seeing them in a few short weeks! Congratulations.

  20. Congratulations – how fantastic that you’ll have four in the show! 🙂 Best of luck in the competition. Will you visit your quilts on display this year?
You’re so right that all who entered should be proud of themselves and their quilts.

  21. Rochelle Summers says:

Congratulations on having all of your quilts accepted into the show. I am amazed at the job the judges must do to look at the excellent and large selection of quilts and make a decision….based on quality photographs. And how wonderful that you will be able to see them hang at Quilt Con and meet up with so many of your quilting buddies. I know that there are many quality quilts that have not been accepted and I admire each and every quilt maker that puts them forward with the hope that others can share their success.

  22. Peggy says:

    Congratulations Yvonne!

  23. Wow, fantastic news! Congratulations, Yvonne!!

  24. Bernie says:

So happy for you Yvonne!! This is going to be quite the show, judging by all of the amazing quilts juried in. I don’t envy the task set before the judges. Congratulations!

  25. Patty says:

Congratulations! I look forward to seeing each and everyone in person!

  26. Anja @ Anja Quilts says:

Congratulations. I still hope to get to QuiltCon some year.

  27. Danice G says:

Congratulations! They are all gorgeous. What an honor, you so greatly deserve that.

  28. Congrats! It’s good to remind folks not to give up, and perhaps to not even give up on entering a specific quilt. I’ve seen at least a couple former #quiltconrejects that this is their year of redemption.

  29. Alycia C says:

Whoot Whoot!!! THat is so awesome!! I am excited for yoU!!

  30. Congratulations Yvonne! That’s wonderful news. Best of luck to you.

  31. dezertsuz says:

Congratulations! That is so wonderful! Each one of them is such a beauty, I’m glad they were all accepted. The numbers on them IS interesting!
