Modern Plus Sampler {Applique Areas}

I knew we would get to this month eventually: it’s time to make the Modern Plus Sampler Applique Blocks for the Modern Plus Sampler Quilt Along hosted by Cheryl (Meadow Mist Designs) and Paige (Quilted Blooms). My domestic sewing machine, a Juki TL-2200QVP Mini, is a straight stitch only machine, so my game plan was to use the Crafted Applique method (non-affiliate link), and it worked out pretty well.

The blocks are supposed to be 14-inches square, but I chose to make them 15-inches square for now and I will trim them down just prior to sewing them together for the quilt top assembly.

The Crafted Applique method allows me to have a neat and tidy raw edge applique with minimal to now fabric fraying, which makes me very happy. I stitched around all the edges to secure the piecing in place using coordinating 50wt Aurifil 4020 (Fuchsia) which matches the Kona Cotton Pomegranate perfectly. The background for my blocks is Kona Cotton Silver.

  1. Excellent, Yvonne! I like your decision to make the block larger and then trim down to size as you are assembling.

    These look great! 😀

  3. They look great! I have read up on that method but never tried it. Your appliqué does look terrific, so I may have to revisit it.

    Hello Yvonne, Your blocks look incredible! I wanted to win a copy of this book so much when it was introduced and then I slowly forgot all about it. I need to put it on a list and try and buy it this year. Thank you for sharing your blocks and I hope that you have a marvelous day!

    The blocks look great. I love Pomegranate. I think I’m going to use that method as well.
