Introducing Precession {LP&Q Issue 68}

With a plan to start traveling in Wabi-Sabi Overland at the end of April next year, I have started tapering off on secret sewing (aka sewing for magazine) projects. Precession is my last publication in Love, Patchwork & Quilting for a while, and I am pleased to get to share it with you today.

I actually designed Precession as a block study which is one quarter of a finished granny square block in the full quilt. The block looked like a top tipped over waiting to be spun, which lead to me naming it Precession. Precession is the motion of the rotation axis of a spinning body, which is often best seen as the wobbling in the pin of a spinning top.

Precession is made from Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton in Snow (background), Pink, Candy Pink, and Cerise. I quilted Precession with 50wt Aurifil 2021 (natural white). I started by quilting the background on my longarm and finished with some straight line quilting over the piecing on my domestic machine.

The Precession project also includes 2 pillow covers for 18 inch pillow forms.

Precession finishes at 54″ x 72″.

If you are interested in making your own version of Precession, you can find the pattern in Issue 68 of Love, Patchwork & Quilting, which released last Thursday (November 29th) and will be available in the US in another 4-6 weeks. The magazine is also available for purchase as a digital download.

Linking up with Amanda’s final Finish it Friday. Thank you Amanda, for everything over the years and best wishes for the next chapter!

    Another clever design – I really like it. When I first looked at the photo of the quilt it almost seemed to be shivering or shimmering, like a trick of the light.

  19. Karen says:

    The quilt is lovely. I appreciate leaning new things and terms – especially from math geeks. Now I know what precession means. But I’m still confused on this being a 1/4 granny square. It looks like a stretched out granny square to me. I actually called my husband over to help sort this out for me. He’s wowed by your quilt as well and loves the gradient of the colors. Thank you for sharing.

  20. Lisa J. says:

    This is another wonderful design Yvonne. I like that it goes down just one side of the quilt. It really does look like it spins. Beautiful!
