Book Review {This is Marketing by Seth Godin}

If you’ve been following me for a while, you have heard me mention Seth Godin before. However, if this is your first introduction to Seth, I am excited to be the one to introduce you. He publishes a blog post every day. Every day.

I’ll pause and let that sink in for a moment.

Seth is eloquent, kind, and deeply invested in helping others do work that matters. In 2017, I took a leap and signed up for The Marketing Seminar, and it connected me to some amazing people (hello David and Ron)! The Marketing Seminar is an intense, 100 day online course and I am excited to let you know that Seth is publishing a new book, This is Marketing, which I view as a condensed version of the Seminar.

Here are a few snippets that resonate with me from the book:

Marketers don’t use consumers to solve their company’s problem; they use marketing to solve other people’s problems. They have the empathy to know that those they seek to serve don’t want what the marketer wants, don’t believe what they believe, and don’t care what they care about. They probably never will.

If you want to make change, begin by making culture. Begin by organizing a tightly knit group. Begin by getting people in sync.

Tension is not the same as fear

If you feel like you’re coercing people, manipulating them or causing them to be afraid, you’re probably doing it wrong.

[…] There might be fear, but tension is the promise that we can get through that fear to the other side.

There is an amazing amount of information in the book, and as you can see above, a lot of what I inherently strive to create here and in the quilting community aligns with much of what Seth has to say. Which is probably one of the reasons I like Seth so much: his worldview aligns with my ethics and internal compass for how I want to live and work.

This is Marketing starts shipping on Tuesday, November 13th. You can visit Seth’s page for This is Marketing to get all the details, some video excerpts from Seth, and get a free PDF excerpt to download and read.

We all do better when we work together. Within the book itself, I noticed that Seth wrote something in a way that shows he was influenced by one of my posts during The Marketing Seminar. We all influence one another, and my hope is that in so doing, we all rise.

Inside the dust cover for the hardback book, Seth included photos as a way of thanks. You might spot me toward the upper right in the photo above.

Post Postscript

This post contains no affiliate links or hidden agenda. I benefited from taking The Marketing Seminar but based on the price and intensity of the course, I was hesitant to share much about it broadly, so I was excited when Seth announced his new book. While This is Marketing might not be for you, I am guessing that you might still find nuggets to consider and mull over in Seth’s daily blog.

Thanks for the heads up for his book and blog.

Hello Yvonne, I am pretty positive that this information will not help me in any specific way. Well that is, until you present it in one of your blog posts in a way that My Damaged Brain would be able to understand and use it correctly. I honestly do have such a difficult time reading information and being able to hold onto it long enough for it to make sense. The majority of the universe do not understand what I go through and it is very difficult to explain.
Yet, that is one of the reasons that I have continued to follow you. I honestly can not explain it, but you have a special way of communicating on your blog all of your brilliance and what you are still discovering and learning in a way that so very often, I can understand. I really have not moved any closer to being a Modern Quilter, but I definitely respect and honor the aspects of all of your quilts and other Modern Quilters also. By following you and your insights, I began to understand your methods and you and so many others are developing such a impact of beauty and art it is fantastic. You know me, I could go on and on. But will stop here. I look forward to reading your posts everyday. Have a magnificent day!

  3. I’ve been getting his daily posts in my inbox for a few years now, and there are many I’ve saved in a special folder within my Mail app. Would that all marketing peeps, wait, all leaders as well, followed his beliefs and systems.

  4. Cindy Pieters says:

I’ve only recently read his blog, thanks to you.

  5. His new book sounds really good, I am glad to hear that it looks like a mini version of the course you took. I know how much you enjoyed and learned from his class.

  6. This is awesome, potentially life changing information, and it is very similar to the components of good mental health therapy. I will check out Seth’s blog (and I thought you wrote frequent blog posts ).

  7. How cool to have your photo included in his book! That must feel amazing!

I really appreciate the time and thought you take to comment, and I look forward to conversing with you. :)
