Rebecca Bryan from Bryan House Quilts is the designer of the August Aurifil block, Rooftops of Amsterdam, and I loved Rebecca’s suggestion to use the pop of color in the block for some fussy cutting. I don’t tend to have a lot of novelty prints in my stash, so I pondered what to use there for a while. And then inspiration struck! If my blocks are going to be a rainbow of colors, this might be the perfect block to combine them all.

I used Rainbow Stripe by Kim Schaefer for Andover Fabrics, but cut it at a 45 degree angle so I could get more colors in each block, and I placed the warm colors at the top and the cool colors at the bottom of the block.

In addition to the rainbow stripe print, I used a combination of prints for the black rooftop stripes including some night owls, which we can often spot on rooftops in our neighborhood on our evening walks.

By adding “rainbow” as one of my block colors, I can now envision getting 4 more blocks made that will fill in this color progression.
Fun block to add to your growing collection. I like the touch of rainbow–brings a snap of color to that block.

Hello Yvonne; This months block with your splash of color is super! What a fabulous suggestion to really enhance a block, I always appreciate tips such as this and even better when I get to see the visual. Making such a dramatic addition is not something I would have done, yet it is marvelous. I also, appreciate seeing all of your blocks laid out. You know my horrible memory problems, Yvonne, so seeing each block all together helps me remember what you are doing. Plus, I always have a tad bit of fun imagining how you will put the quilt together. The other detail you mentioned about being able to see Owls while you were taking walks just instantly made me want to be right there with you! I saw my first Horned Owl in Texas and my goodness Yvonne, that Owl was almost as tall as I am. No Joking….plus so beautiful in a wide variety of greys, browns and whites. He has made me very interested in Owls. We never did see another one that size but like you saw them quite often. Here in Southern Oregon, we have several that come a “visiting” along the Applegate River that runs below our home. We never know when they will show up or how long they will stay. Plus, very seldom do we get to see them because of the multitude of trees between us and the river. Yet, we love to sit outside while they are around and listen to them talk to each other for hours. I just wanted to share this with you, I hope that you enjoy your Owls as much as we enjoy ours!
