2018 Aurifil BOM – June

Kerry from Kid Giddy is the designer of the June Aurifil block, the Tonga Block, and I could not wait to sew this one together! Kerry’s block is inspired by Tonga and depicts a sea turtle. As you probably saw earlier this year through my Deep Dive mini quilt, my husband and I really love sea turtles. I waited until we both had a bit of free time on Sunday afternoon, and together my husband and I selected fabrics to create the Tonga Block.

We selected fabrics from Leslie Tucker Jenison‘s most recent fabric line, Urban Garden, for the turtle and we love how the texture of her prints reads as turtle skin and shell!

To keep the turtle the focal point, we opted for using another black and white print around the sides.

I’m also thrilled that the green sea turtle fits in perfectly with the rainbow of blocks I am creating for the year.

If you are sewing along, each month one person who links up their pieced block wins a 12 large spool kit, and there are usually 25-30 entries. So don’t forget to link up your version for your chance to win. The versions already shared this month are diverse and amazing!

That’s a great looking turtle! I love the way your blocks are coming together! And I love that your husband had a hand in picking the fabrics!

What a difference color choice makes! Your block looks like a turtle. I sometimes wonder how sewist come up with name for blocks. I was really struggling with that in the original block. You and your husband make a great designed team.

  5. The turtle is so adorable and I was thinking that you were going to say this would become one for the quilts you are making for you and your husband. I am fascinated by how they are all working out so well and am really enjoying your fabric choices!

Yvonne, I love your block. I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to incorporate my butterflies into this block…where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Hello Yvonne; I adore your block! The fabrics chosen are so perfect. It has been years since I have considered any paper pieced patterns. Yet, it seems they are every where I look for the past week. I just may have to make this one. Who knows….but thank you for sharing your great block and the encouragement for making one and entering it to win. I hope you have a splendid day!

  8. I saw a person before I saw a turtle! Maybe it is a Tongan and a Tongan turtle!

  9. Kate says:

That’s a very fun turtle. You picked a great fabric for the shell.

  10. Bernie says:

Like Granny Maud – I also saw a person first. But looking at the turtle, the fabrics you chose are perfect textures for the shell and skin. Very nice!

  11. Jasmine @ Quilt Kisses says:

I love the fabrics you picked together. I also love how your black and white fabrics tie all the blocks together.
