For years, my oldest niece said her favorite color was black (because black is “all the colors”). Just before I went back to visit in April, I heard her say that Pink and Purple are her favorite colors, something that she maintained during our visit (“…but I still like black, too!”). I know that my nieces have lots of quilts already, but I couldn’t help but think of my Magnolia Mystery quilt top that is waiting to be finished.

Magnolia Mystery Quilt – Pieced Quilt Top
Now that I can clearly see gifting this quilt to my niece, it was time to figure out the backing for the quilt! I turned to my favorite source for wide quilt backings, BackSide Fabrics. I love that Christine groups her fabrics in different ways. I looked at the pink and purple fabrics, and I quickly selected Grape Ombre Scroll.

I received the fabric late on Saturday night, and I think it will even make the perfect binding for the quilt. Now I just need to finish a few projects so I can get this quilted, finished, and gifted!
Inserted in my order was this notice about a big sale that will be happening at BackSide Fabrics in just over a week, and I thought I’d share in case you have been on the lookout for a perfect backing for a project or two, as well!
I don’t know what age your eldest niece is, but I can see this is a quilt and that will grow with her. Young enough to appeal to her now, but not outdated when she reaches her teens. I love all the negative space too. This year’s mystery quilt was a great one
Magnolia quilt is magnificent! Thanks for the tip on Backside Fabrics. I am definitely going to place an order!
I am looking forward to seeing how you quilt the negative space. I have fallen in love with widebacks, especially when I’m in a hurry to get the quilt finished.
This has to be the perfect backing to compliment your quilt! I am excited to see how you quilt it. 😀
Thanks for the heads up on the backing fabric sale. I may have to check that out; maybe I can actually finish my oldest UFO! I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t finished their Magnolia Mystery quilt yet!
The quilt is gorgeous and the backing is perfect! I really love when shops make it easy to search for specific things. Bet you are glad to get this one finished!
She’ll love getting this great quilt in the mail!
Excellent choice of backing fabric. And how nice to have an intended recipient for a quilt!
That fabric is perfect for the backing.
I love that reasoning for why one should like black. That is precious.
Great choice for a backing – I love that this modern quilt all go to your niece because it will be pleasing to her as she grows up. It will be used for a long while to come.
Arrrgh, I really need to finish my Magnolia. Yours is beautiful, and I’m sure your niece will love it! (Thanks for the tip about the Backside sale, too.)
Absolutely perfect Yvonne! It’s so much fun when it all comes together perfectly!
What a superb backing, love the design and the colours there.
That’s a great backing. Good luck with quilting…when you finally get around to it.
Is that a Moda? It reminds me of a couple of the purple scrolls I used in my daughter’s grad quilt. Love how the quilt found its own home and I know you will have it to her in no time!
Looks like the perfect backing!
What a pretty quilt, and backing. Your niece will love it. Thanks for the heads-up about the upcoming sale also.
Love your quilt. That is such a fun story about your niece and her favorite color(s)! I peeked at that website–what a great source for x-wide backs!
Perfect backing choice for Magnolia! I really like how the print is not just one color but looks like a bunch of colors layered on each other. I can’t wait to see how you decide to quilt the quilt!
Oh my goodness, I don’t think you could have found a more perfect backing. What about a fun black binding? That way you can still include all the colors 😉
Sometimes everything just works out perfectly!
It’s always a nice feeling to realize an in progress project is perfect for someone. Hopefully you can get it all finished up and on it’s way to your niece soon.
