Aurifil 2018 Design Team
In November, I shared my excitement about being included in the 2018 Aurifil Design Team. Today, I get to share my block and design!
The theme this year is ‘The Places We Go’ and the palette is Black and White and a Color.
When thinking about my favorite place to go, driving California State Route 1 along the Pacific Ocean is one of my favorite things to do with my husband. Heading north on SR1 and crossing over Bixby Bridge, an iconic structure just north of Big Sur, marks the passage from coastal drive back into urban living.

Bixby Bridge Block
You can read an interview with me and get more details on the inspiration for the Bixby Bridge Block on the Aurifil Blog today. If you make a version of the block and add it to the link up, you can be in with the chance of winning an Aurifil thread box! All the details are in the Aurifil blog post.

Aurifil BOM Blocks Through April
The first version of the Bixby Bridge Block, shown above, has been mailed off to Pat Sloan, who is hosting the Block of the Month program. She will be taking all the blocks mailed in from the designers to create a final layout early in 2019. As I am sewing along as well this year, I made a second version to add to my growing collection of blocks. I’m enjoying the spread of accent colors used for the blocks so far this year.
Are you sewing along? All the blocks in the Aurifil BOM programm (and all the previous years) are free patterns available on the Aurifil blog. I look forward to seeing your versions of the Bixby Bridge Block!
Hello Yvonne; I read your interview on the Auriful site and enjoyed getting to know you a little bit better. Each one of the pictures you shared were also a great way to let us get to know you better without having to say a word. I have to say that any drive along the coast is a favorite “vacation” time for me! The sights are so amazing and the history is fascinating. Puppy is beautiful and I laughed that she beats you to the door, I have never known a cat to do that. I think your Bridge block is fabulous! With everything else going on in my quilting world, I do not think I will be able to make it at this time, but have saved it and hope that I can soon. Congrats on being chosen as a designer of the month for Aurifil ! Have a spectacular day!
What a great block! So very unusual and fun.
Very cool block. Congrats. I keep downloading the patterns, but I never get around to making them. sigh…..
No I’m sewing vicariously through you! Great block Yvonne; saw you were the designer interviewed but haven’t had a chance to read the post yet (been rather busy day today, and I bet you can guess why!) That coastal drive is stunning; I’ve only done it from Washington to half way down Oregon, but would love to one day go along the California coast too.
You’ve created a block with alot of interest. I like how the color is distinct but the black & white is definitely the key player.
Your blocks is such a realistic interpretation of the bridge. A nice remembrance of happy travels!
What a great interpretation of the bridge! Your block is stunning in itself.
Love this block Yvonne! You nailed it and while I’m not making the blocks, I always enjoy seeing them and especially seeing the finished quilt at the end of the year!
Very unique block. It turned out beautifully.
I like how the black in all of your blocks is tying them together. Also, that is a very clever use of a striped fabric to create the structure of the bridge.
I used to love the idea of travelling, but my favourite place these days would be a coin toss between my bed and my armchair!
